Over the years the men and women that risk their lives by boarding planes under a false identity to protect us have been called many things. The names range from simple, “Sky Marshal” to more complicated “Civil Aviation Security Liaison Officers.” No matter what they have been called through the years one thing has always stayed the same. The United States Federal Air Marshals have always been a group of our finest law enforcement officers that give up the luxury traditional police work to sit next to crying babies and old talkative ladies all day. They do this with one goal in mind, to keep the airways safe for private citizens to enjoy the luxury of travel. “The history of the air marshals is closely rooted with the history of hijackings and bombings targeting commercial aircraft. Some of the bombings and hijackings throughout history had more of an impact than others on Federal Air Marshal tactics, manpower and security procedures. These events and the responses of those in civil aviation and the US government are essential to understand the need for air marshals as a last line of defense.” (Biles, 2013) With the rise of crime in the aviation sector the US government has gone to the Federal Air Marshals more times than not for protection of its citizens. It has not always been easy for them and they have not had the best funding around but as you will see throughout this paper, The US Federal Air Marshals have always answered when called upon.

...s destruction. We must look to the future and imagine what we can do to stop these crimes from happening. One thing is for sure; with a strong number of Federal Air Marshals in service it becomes much more difficult to commit one of these crimes.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) owes its creation to many significant events in aviation history. One of them includes the creation of the Air Mail Act of 1925, which spearheaded the creation of commercial airlines that worked for a profit. The United States Marshal Service (USMS) is a part of the Department of Justice. The United States Marshal Service occupies ninety-four United States Marshals, all appointed by the president. One Marshal is appointed to each federal court district. The headquarters is located in Washington, D.C. This is the oldest and most versatile federal law enforcement service. Although this service is often overlooked, it is critical in maintaining order in law enforcement. This service arrests approximately 337 fugitives every day. In addition to having offices held in the United States, offices are also open overseas in Columbia, Jamaica, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic. The United States Marshal Service is responsible for detaining the most dangerous fugitives. This service provides many services which include managing prisoners, and sponsoring the Witness Security Program.

In the late 1930’s, over 150,000 volunteer aviation enthusiast wanted to put their skills and planes to use to protect their country. The Civil Air Patrol was born was born one week prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. During the course of WWII, Civil Air Patrol logged over 500,000 flight hours, sunk two enemy submarines. The Civil Air Patrol has an interesting history from World War II up until the present day. In the early stages of Civil Air Patrol, there was a strong need for national defense on the east coast where German U-boats had sunk multiple cargo and supply freighters within miles of the coast. The US Army Air Corp had made the decision to allow Civil Air Patrol to make ninety day trial patrol missions up to one-hundred and fifty miles out from the east coast to search for enemy submarines.

Reading thoroughly numerous articles and periodicals about my degree and career field has helped me to direct and focus my research in the right direction, thus encouraging me to continue educating myself about the different federal law enforcement positions available.
