Project 150 is an amazing organization. They are a charity that works to provide necessary materials for students who can’t afford them. They recognize that being a high school student is not easy. Project 150 works to make it a bit easier for many students who may be struggling through ‘tougher than usual’ circumstances. From what I've seen they have a mission to try and not only help but also guide students to a brighter future. They provide the opportunity for students to succeed even when the odds are against them.
Unfortunately, there is a fairly common problem in our community. Hundreds of students are going to school knowing that school lunch may be the only meal they eat that day. They leave school knowing they have no place to go. Its a sad situation but there is hope. That is where project 150 steps in; they provide numerous resources and supplies in order to help and support them. They provide things like clothing, food, and even school supplies.
Prom and Homecoming are traditional events at almost every school in Southern Nevada, but there are many students who are not be able to attend due to financial circumstances. Project 150 allows students to have a much more ‘normal’ school experience by providing things like homecoming and prom outfits. Project 150 is therefore giving these students a chance to be involved in these school activities that would have otherwise not even been an option. This is just one example of how this organization represents the generosity of the community; they are doing it simply to make someone else’s life a little easier.Because they are a non-profit establishment they are not in it in order to end up with any financial gain.

As far as awareness of the problem it would be along the same lines. If they were to get public figures to address the problem or possibly get the news to do a segment on it, it would make a great impact. As with all things nowadays social media would be essential. Nearly everybody has some type of social media account and outreach through those outlets could prove to be very beneficial in getting the public’s attention on this issue. If project 150 were to succeed in making a large number of people aware of the situation then it could lead to not only more resources, but also more innovative ideas in reference to how we could get Project 150’s mission across to hundreds of other students in need.
EPIC is the Educational Participation in Communities. This organization involves students as volunteers in the fight against poverty and social neglect in local communities. The goal is social awareness and student involvement. It says that poverty, neglect, and social inequity are a growing reality for millions of people in America. Families are losing their homes, people can't find good jobs, children go hungry, and education in the inner-city is a disaster. There is a is problem because the public and community programs that serve as a safety net to assist such populations are strained beyond their capacity and are usually understaffed and under-funded. Since they cannot do the job without help, EPIC helps. It recruits college students to do volunteer work in schools, hospitals, community centers, legal aid, probation, youth agencies, and other and public service programs. EPIC volunteers provide thousands of volunteer hours to the community.
For my Cultural Plunge, I participated with Project Excell (Extending College Education for Lifelong Learning). This is a group that meets on campus, in the union, every Saturday morning from 9:00-11:00 AM. Each participant has a developmental disability and they come from various places around Manhattan. Project Excell offers around 4 different classes for the participants to choose from, which range from dancing/theatre to the history of Nigeria. After completing a “session,” the participants go through a graduation ceremony and then begin a different type of class for the next few weeks. I joined this group as a student ambassador, who assists the classroom teachers while building relationships with and tending to the needs of the participants.

From what was just receiving volunteer hours with Rockdale Emergency Relief by graciously assisting with the preparation of 150 sack lunches daily, opened the door of a returned passion. One after another, I was filling multiple brown paper bags with a sandwich, bag of chips, a Capri Sun, and a healthy fruit snack while preparing to make my rounds for delivery to my assigned neighborhoods within Rockdale County. At each stop, I will never forget the innocent face of each child that waited for this delivery. I felt as if I were driving an ice-cream truck as all the children stumbled over one another running out of their homes towards us, Summer Lunch Program volunteers, with joy anticipating their sack lunches. Questions ran through my head wondering how one could be so ecstatic about what I had prepared in each bag. It was not candy, ice-cream, nor toys, but it was proper nourishment to each growing body reaching for their meal. As an important factor to their daily function, I could comprehend by their eagerness how much this delivery meant to each child and their parents or caregivers, and that made my heart melt. Project Citizen is an annual project where people in the 7th grade must identify a problem with Edgewood Middle School or the community and come up with a solution for the problem. In past years of Project Citizen, there have been many meaningful changes to Highland Park and Edgewood.Some of these were recycling bins in Edgewood and traffic lights and stop signs where they were needed. Before these ideas were set into place, nobody realized how much they were needed. It is a program that can be very impactful on our community.
I was curious about how is work going to be divided. Since the project requires everyone’s participation, the group work was divided fairly and equally among us. Also, I was excited to have a real working experience with my classmates. In fact, this project gave me an insight of how much we get along together regardless of our differences. During the project, pride was the dominant feeling. That is mainly because the outcomes of this project will most likely benefit the students, teachers, and faculty of The Wilson Elementary School.
Class members will rank the presentations, the top 3-5 initiatives will be chosen, and students will be assigned according to their preferences. At the same time, students will initiate a Kickstarter campaign, inviting students, faculty, parents, and alumni to contribute. Student teams will work to develop a business plan and funding proposal for their initiative, working with professors, outside speakers, and alumni mentors to refine their ideas. In the last week of the block, student teams will present their proposals at a campus-wide symposium on social justice. An alumni panel will evaluate the proposals and award Kickstarter funds to the proposals they find most compelling. The regulations passed by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act make it harder than ever for schools to provide adequate nutrition to students by having such rigorous guidelines. While some schools have had no issue following guidelines, not every school is able to source viable food while staying in budget. It is vital that cafeterias are able to successfully meet guidelines, but it is also important that they provide food that students will eagerly consume as well as help them become better students.
According to No Kid Hungry, “1 out of 5 children go to school every day hungry.” This issue of childhood hunger in America is an issue that needs to be more addressed than it is. Sure, there is a lot one can do through organizations. There is donating, volunteering, and just talking about it, but not enough people are doing it. It is not enough to try and decrease the amount of children that are going hungry. It is not enough to help these families who cannot feed their children. It is not enough to end hunger. We maybe be able to stop it, and the answer may be looking towards school.
With the implementation of the “Healthy Kids Hunger-Free Act” schools are not serving as many lunches and participation is decreasing. According to the Government Accountability Office (GOA), “Nationwide, student participation declined by 1.2 million students(or 3.7 percent) from school year 2010-2011 through school year 2012-2013, after having increased steadily for many years”(sec. 1). The relationship between young people and nonprofits can be the start of a significant change in our community, and should be a reciprocal and powerful educational experience. An open-minded and encouraging flow of communication between organizations and community members can be the launchpad for the social and environmental change organizations talk about and try for every day. Together, we can make change – not just a semblance of idealism, but reality, as well.
Many of these children only get a full meal while having their school lunch, so many of these children go hungry the rest of the day.
As a Lancaster native, I have had an opportunity to experience the many facets of life for youth within the county. I have had close friends lose their way and sense of direction, due to a lack of leaders and positive mentors. I was fortunate to have these positive figures in my life to deter any unhealthy or destructive behavior. As I view things now, I see that more and more young men and women are falling victim to this trap, and have not found a way to end this detrimental cycle. A major issue concerning this matter is a lack of adequate funding for the mentoring programs. Raising community awareness to students will teach them the importance of being involved in the community. Students being able to give back to the community will prepare them for their journey to being a positive role model or servant leader.
Your food pantry also needs to make sure they send out lots of letters and notifications to the local schools, so that the parents will be aware of the food pantry and know what is going on. The last thing that you can do is put flyers up in all your local stores in your community. You need to make sure that you do this so everyone will be aware of you, if they ever need some extra help. This will help all the people that may eventually need some help in their future.
