In Let Your Life Speak, Palmer paraphrases the wisdom given by the Quaker Ruth saying “there is as much guidance in what does not and cannot happen in my life as there is in what can and does—maybe more.” his premise is tantamount to heresy toward western cultural ideology. Experience has led me to agree with this premise, having found greater guidance and personal reward when the proverbial door closed on a goal or direction toward which I was marching yet was ill equipped to embrace. Although our cultural mythology mandates success in defiance of limitations as the reward of honest effort, relegating failure to the lazy, many discover upon reflection that failure offers greater guidance and personal reward.
In my adolescence I would often be asked to take care of younger siblings or cousins, occasionally I would be paid by neighbors to do the same. In once such instance while preparing food for a 5 year old cousin I learned an early lesson in acceptable failure. Though directed and admonished repeatedly to stop bothering my sister’s cat, the child was apparently quite convinced that cats like to be sat upon, or he was until the cat issued a final irritated growl and raked his tormenter with his claws before making a swift escape under a bed. Despite being taught that the cat would react with anger, and that he would get hurt, it was the experience that actually conveyed the lesson. Even as a 12 year old I recognized the impact of the lesson, my cousin was much more attentive to things he was told would Hurt him, and though still curious and interested in the cat, he gave the animal a wider berth. In American society an individual is a “failure” when unable to achieve a goal to which they aspire. However as both Palmers life and my own indicate; if the reason for this failure is due to limitations or liabilities that would have made them ill-suited to the responsibilities of their aspiration, or provide them with the seeds of greater success then it is not truly failure, it is experience. I believe American poet and activist Maya Angelou put in best when stated in 2004 “You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.”
Many individuals strive to be the best and thrive in this world inhabited by seven billion people, by taking control over their own destiny. However, success requires a sacrifice of personal desires and ambitions at times which not a lot amongst us are willing to give. It is sooner or later that the temporary reformation fails and their true self resurfaces where they are back at where they began. A lot of us are unwillingly left to deal and live with these unfortunate circumstances. The impact that these events leave upon us is very significant and sometimes temporary. Many people believe that if you don’t succeed at first, you must try and try again until you succeed. The reason for people to believe in this belief is because its gets transmitted constantly through others. But the thing is that people don’t know how to distinguish false or true beliefs, what often causes us to believe in beliefs has to do with our society. A Harvard college professor of psychology, Daniel Gilbert, wrote a book called Stumbling on Happiness, explaining how people tend to have delusions about their future which often misleads people’s happiness. What sets people apart in life are the decisions we make and the paths we follow, but sometimes our judgement is clouded and it is difficult to make the right choices. In which case, we seek guidance on what to do. However, for Henry David Thoreau, Chris McCandless, and Timothy Treadwell, a sense of independence or even sheer stubbornness may cause someone to ignore the advice of others. It is important to follow one’s own heart, but one must also acknowledge the consequences of his actions.
After reading Failure is Not an Option by Nathan Wallace, we ponder whether failure is beneficial or not. However, after reading the passage, we stumble upon a quote where Wallace says “Failure is always an option. Failure can lead to great learning and progress when a specific failure is analyzed through the lens of a growth mindset.”
‘A good smack never did a child any harm, that’s how they learn what is right and what is wrong’ has been proven wrong by Behavioral Psychologists, by conducting conditioning experiments. B.F Skinner who studied and performed an experiment on operant conditioning proved that to punish a child, does not always provide the direction that reward does, and in fact it teaches the child that a particular behaviour is unacceptable, and doesn’t show which other behaviours are acceptable.
To Thoreau, life’s progress has halted. It seems people have confused progression with captivity driven by materialism. To Krakaeur, people are indifferent to pursing the sublime in nature. To Christopher McCandles the world around him is forgetting the purpose of life. People are blind to nature. In the eyes of these men the world is victim to commercial imprisonment. People live to achieve statuses that only exist because man made them. Fame, money, and monotonous relationships do not exist in nature; they are the pursuits of soulless fundamentalism. The truth is that people pursue meaningless goals, and people don’t want to hear or know how they are foolish. When exposed, reality is so unsettling that it seems wrong. Yet, to be free of the falseness in life is in essence the point of singularity that people realize if there is no truth in love then it is false, if there is no truth in money then it is worthless, if there is no truth in fame then it is undeserving. Without truth everything is a worthless pursuit of a meaningless glass ceiling.
Children are reacting to the authority of persons in their lives. The teacher acts in a firm but friendly manner to reinforce limits, raise conscious levels, and teach alternative behaviours. I have noticed a child in a childcare, showed mistaken behaviour as a result of dominant character. Despite her small size, she has rapidly become one of the leaders. She plays with just about all of toys, and she has a constant need to be in control of other. She occasionally gets in to arguments, with her peers when they no longer accept her leadership. She has difficulty resolving these conflicts and frequently has a tantrum when she is unable to have her own way. Then I made them sit quietly and I asked her whether she likes it when her friend feels sad. He says "no." I continue to guide him through discovering a solution by asking questions until we reach one that works. The kind gesture makes her feel happy and stopped her argument with peers. Together we find a solution that builds her awareness and how to solve peer conflicts, giving him tools to build positive relationships in the future. Initially, I define the two concepts of mistaken behavior and misbehavior, the first as an error in judgment and action made in the process of learning life skills. Mistaken behaviors occur at three levels which are: experimentation, socially influenced, and strong unmet needs. Teachers who use guidance see self-ruled life skills as difficult to learn, and they recognize that children are just at the beginning stages of a lifelong process of learning these skills. In the process of learning any difficult skill, children, like all of us, make mistakes. These teachers recognize that when children experiences conflicts it is because they have not yet developed the cognitive and emotional resources for more mature responses. The second concept being misbehavior is the conventional term applied to conflicts that the child is involved in, resulting in consequences that often include punishment and the internalization of a negative label such a “naughty”. The complexity of teaching self-ruled life skills leads some adults to the misconception that young children know how to behave, they just choose to misbehave. When conflicts occur, teacher who focus on misbehavior tend to label the child’s character and attempt to shame the child into better behavior.
From when a child is born, to adulthood, everything done because of them, to them, or in front of them leaves a “puzzle piece” in their brain. By the time they have reached the age of 16 and up, they most likely have already decided or already have become the kind of person they want to be. What they have witnessed and experienced throughout the years of their upbringing has left enough puzzle pieces for them to piece together the type of person they will be. Learned helplessness is defined as the idea that clinical depression and similar mental illnesses could result from the real or perceived lack of control (Hock, 2013). This concept has been studied immensely throughout the years. One of the first psychologists to pursue this phenomenon was Martin E. P. Failure is apart of life, it can make or break a person. When a person experiences a type of failure it is now up to them to see how they respond. They can choose the high road, and become a stronger person for it. Then they can choose the low road, the easy way out. The easy way out is never a good choice. It can lead only to destruction. The high road is the right choice to take when responding to failure. It will lead down a path of success. Jessica Lahey’s article, “When Success Leads to Failure” is an article that shows how kids are experiencing failure. Lahey says that, “these kids have a fear for failure, and that they have given up natural loves for learning. They are scared of not being successful”(Lahey). The truth is life is hard there will be failure. There is nothing in this world that comes easy to anyone.
“The failure is the mother of success” this Chinese quote said that failure is not the end. Failure is where people learn from their mistake. People cannot be successful all the time. Indeed, there are many people who learned from their failures before being successful. Each failure that people had met is a helpful lesson and valuable experience to help them become a better person.
