The Evolution of Our Country
The United States of America is considered one of the greatest nations in the world, but it did not get to be this way very easily. Our ancestors went through many trials and tribulations in our history and had to learn many lessons the hard way to get us to where we are today. Events like The Great Depression taught us many things. Also, new inventions, westward expansion and Roosevelt's New Deal impacted our country in positive ways.
In 1866, with the American Civil War fresh in memory, workers desired a simpler way of life after the radical change in American culture. Many labor organizations, known as "brotherhoods", existed previously to the split of the Union but did not become organized until after the reunification. The first of them, The National Labor Union, became organized with over 650,000 workers by the early 1870's and called for steady wages and respect for its laborers. The National Labor Union also paved the way for several other famous organizations such as The Knights of Labor and the American Federation of Labor.
Organized labor brought about new opportunities for workers, granting both the skilled and unskilled chances for work. Not only were they given jobs, but they were given set down forms of pay and eight-hour day work schedules (americaslibray.gov). Families were given a steady income, which granted them a sense of security. With the hope of work, families would flock to metropolitan cities, causing a massive growth in population and individual demands. The main area of supporters to the NLU came from construction companies. The primary focus was on railroad construction, which was one of the largest sources of employment outside of agriculture. These labor unions gave investors top work for little concern. Things started to look up for people, but soon started to fall again.
An economic collapse in the early 1870s, known as the Panic of 1873, was one of the primary reasons the NLU went into distress. A Philadelphia-based banker, Jay Cooke, desired to create the second transcontinental railroad in the country, the Northern Pacific Railroad. The project, however, was over-manned and poorly conceived on a financial level. Over eighty banks filed for bankruptcy leading to the stock market being closed for ten days. Mass layoffs were put into effect by 1875, and by 1876 the unemployment rate was just under 15% (wikipedia.
Companies and factories were expanding and women and children were able to join the workforce. The Knights of Labor, led by Powderly, attracted both skilled and unskilled workers. They participated in many of the major events due to the Knights of Labor such as the Haymarket Riot and the great railroad strike. Another big labor union was the American Federation of Labor (AFof L), led by Samuel Gompers. While the Knights of Labor allowed skilled and unskilled workers, the American Federation of Labor only allowed skilled workers. America has overcome good and bad, ever since we gained our independence. Several large events changed how we view the past and we never want to visit those scenarios ever again. World War II changed lives throughout the world, especially the lives of Americans. Japan sneaked attack Pearl Harbor, Americans dropped bombs on Japan, and the US economy plummeted. We will never want to revisit these events, but they will always be remembered.

The American Federation of Labor’s main weapon was walkouts and boycotts to get industries to succeed to better conditions and higher wages. By the early 1900’s, its membership was up to ½ million workers. Through the years since The Great Depression, labor unions were responsible for several benefits for employees. Workers have safer conditions, higher paying jobs to choose from, and better benefits negotiated for them by their collective bargaining unit.
The rise of industrialization and laissez faire were key constituents in the rise of labor unions; businesses were given more breathing room and had more influence in the economics than the government. Citizens were feuding the need to obtain better working hours, reasonable wages, and safer working conditions; this was mainly prompted by industrialization. In the mid-nineteenth century, industrial America witnessed an evolving struggle between labor and big business. Although fiercely opposed by industrialists, rising labor movements in the steel and iron industries, which had become increasingly critical to the U.S.’ modernization and emergence as a world power, experienced initial success for decades up until the early 1890s. The strongest union in the industries, the Amalgamated of Iron and Steel Workers (AAIS) was able to garner support from an increasing membership and national recognition from other labor organizations as well as from the press, and in 1892, rose to meet the challenge of the powerful Carnegie Steel Company.
Union affiliation was first seen in the 1600’s when the roots of the United States were just being planted with skilled trade groups such as artisans, laborers, goldsmiths and printers. Over the next two hundred years, unions developed their desires for higher wages through the use of strikes and protests. The nation’s progress spurred the need for more labor and so began the Industrial Revolution. During the Revolution, many union members began to witness the power that employers had and as a result decided to make use of the concept of power in numbers. Beginning in the late 1700’s and growing rapidly even today, labor unions form the backbone for the American workforce and continue to fight for the common interests of workers around the country. As we look at the history of these unions, we see powerful individuals such as Terrence Powderly, Samuel Gompers, and Eugene Debs rise up as leaders in a newfound movement that protected the rights of the common worker and ensured better wages, more reasonable hours, and safer working conditions for those people (History). The rise of these labor unions also warranted new legislation that would protect against child labor in factories and give health benefits to workers who were either retired or injured, but everyone was not on board with the idea of foundations working to protect the interests of the common worker. Conflict with their industries lead to many strikes across the country in the coal, steel, and railroad industries, and several of these would ultimately end up leading to bloodshed. However, the existence of labor unions in the United States and their influence on their respective industries still resonates today, and many of our modern ideals that we have today carry over from what these labor unions fought for during through the Industrial Revolution.
A common trend was always that wages were not keeping up with the cost of living. Many could not make ends meet and were struggling to simply survive. When the constitution of the United States was formed, the framers specifically designed the American Government structure to have checks and balances and democracy. To avoid autocracy the President was give power to preside over the executive branch of the government and as commander –in –chief, in which a clause was put into place to give the president the power to appeal any sudden attacks against America, without waiting for a vote from congress. While the president presides over the executive branch there has been ongoing debate over the role of the president in regards to foreign policy. Should foreign policy issues be an executive function by the president or should congress play a much greater role? With the sluggishness of our democracy, foreign policy issues most times need quicker response compared to how domestic policy is decided in the United States. Many believe to maintain openness and democracy both the president and congress need to agree on how the United States handles issue abroad. Although the president has been given much power, his or her power and decisions are sometimes limited based on decisions by congress and challenged and shaped by various bureaucracies throughout the government system. I shall discuss the Presidents role and the role of governmental bureaucracies (Department of Defense, Department of State and the National Security Council) that work together and sometimes not together to shape and implement American foreign Policy.
These early unions had many names including societies, social societies and guilds. These primitive unions or guilds of carpenters, cordwainers, and cobblers made their appearance, often temporary, in cities around the east coast of colonial America. These group of workers were a far cry from what unions are today. They mainly focused on friendship and trust between the workers and management. The first recorded form of a union was a group called the "Friendly Society of Cotton Spinners, who in 1775 instructed its members not to work below the usual price" (Smith).

Throughout American history, labor unions have served to facilitate mediation between workers and employers. Workers seek to negotiate with employers for more control over their labor and its fruits. “A labor union can best be defined as an organization that exists for the purpose of representing its members to their employers regarding wages and terms and conditions of employment” (Hunter). Labor unions’ principal objectives are to increase wages, shorten work days, achieve greater benefits, and improve working conditions. Despite these goals, the early years of union formation were characterized by difficulties (Hunter).
