A sport that many people spend their whole lives playing or watching used to not be exactly what is today. Even though golf is a very well known sport now, golf has been around for hundreds of years and is played by people all over the world. The game of golf is played at many different levels all the way from junior tournaments, all the way to professional events. The evolution of the sport of golf is made up of a couple main things. These two main things are how golf got its start, and what has changed about the game.
The sport of golf was created a long time ago but is not actually precisely dated for when the game was made. According to Jack Connelly, a retired teacher and golfer, reports that the game has been dated back to places like China and Scotland. There also is a wide year range for the time golf was created going all the way back to the 960’s to more exact years like 1457. 6AM. A young man wakes up, showers, and eats breakfast. He then continues to his bedroom, embellishing himself in the simple yet characteristic mixture of white and khaki. He continues to his place of employment, breathing the soft scent of elm and grass. Within the caddie must lay the characteristics of a well-rounded, young adult, embodying the work ethic of those most inspiring before him. Charles “Chick” Evans, who once was a caddy and worldly renowned golfer, appreciates the fine young adults that have endured the morning wakeup call everyday in the summer. To whom that are applicable can ultimately be awarded the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship. Named after Chick Evans himself because he dropped out of college in 1912 for lack of money, the scholarship is funded by donations from golfers and the proceeds of an annual professional tournament (Spears, 1995). Although Chick Evans has passed away many years ago, his legacy still lives on through the 825 scholars currently enrolled in 19 universities all across the United States. Chick Evans has made a profound have impact on the golf community and caddies looking for a way to pay for college.
The main reason Augusta National is the greatest American golf course comes from its natural beginnings. Originally the property the golf course stands on was Fruitland Nurseries. From 1858 until 1918 this company imported many trees and plants from around the world to decorate the landscape. Golfing legend Bobby Jones discovered this land after retiring in 1930 and chose it as the location for his dream golf course. To pay homage to the ground’s history, every hole is named for a different plant found on each hole.
Golf is a game of honor. The furthest ball from the hole must be hit first to try and get it in. In match play, if the a player gets a double par they must pick up the ball and move on to the next hole. In golf, a player compete against an opponent to see who can hit the ball in the hole, the least amount of strokes. The athlete must endure mild to intense workouts to become good at the sport. The most important aspect to work on in golf, is the swing. The athlete must focus on their golf swing to perform optimal swing mechanics. This is because the players consistency for 18 holes “depends on a stable golf swing” (Pedersen). While swinging a club, a person can work at least 16 different muscle groups in their body, so training these muscle groups will help their overall ability. Last but not least balance is another essential for every golf player. In golf, “...players who are restricted in their hips or shoulders start to strike the ball better if they downshift to 75 percent or 80 percent of full tempo” (Nilsson). Balance is a key factor in playing and being good at
Ding! The solid thump of a club hitting a golf ball is a wonderful yet soothing sound. Would this even be a sound that golf enthusiasts enjoy without some of golf’s biggest legends? The game of golf is getting stronger and part of that reason is because of some major golf legends. “Youth playing the game has increased by 20% from 2.5 million in 2010 to 3 million in 2015,”(Heitner). Some of golf’s major legends are Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Gary Player. Along with these golf legends there are some golfers today making a name for themselves. Some of these golfers include, Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, and Jason Day. All of these golfers might be from different times, but they all play/played the same game we all know and
The History of Golf Balls The golf ball has changed dramatically over the years. Smooth hardwood balls were used between the 1400 and 1700's.
The first tournament was held on March 22, 1934 and was won by Horton Smith. Masters Tournament structure has changed very little since the early years. It still lasts four days with stroke play on eighteen holes each day. Instead of having groups of threesomes for final round play, like most other tournaments, the players are paired into twos. Also, unlike other tournaments, The Masters did not include qualifying rounds.

The legendary beginnings of golf in the United States can be traced back to the mid-1600s. One of the first published references to golf in America was in 1659 referring to the ban on golf in the streets of Albany, New York. The next substantial reference to the game comes from Charleston, North Carolina in 1786. At that time, a local Charleston newspaper ran a story about the formation of the Harleston Green Golf Club. The Harleston Green remained in operation for approximately twenty-five years, closing about the time of the War of 1812. Around the same time period, approximately1795, another golf club opened in Savannah, Georgia. References to this golf club continued until 1811 again apparently closing just before the beginning of the war. The War of 1812 served to destroy the desire to play golf. It wasn’t until the late 1870s, well after the Civil War ended, that there was a resurgence of golf in the United States.
Contrary to what most think, an “Arnold Palmer” is not just a blend of tea and lemonade. One day, all might be able to swing a golf club like Arnold Palmer. Golf has been around since the thirteenth century and was introduced by the Scottish and Dutch. The main goal of golf is to reach the hole in the fewest amount of shots possible. One main difference between golf and many other sports is the lower the score the better. Regardless of the fact that the game was once banned, golf is now enjoyed by many (“The History of Golf”). Despite the images in common golf commercials, the golf swing is endlessly complicated.
Golf is a very physical sport. You use 17 muscle groups in the swing of a golf club. Sports require coordinated muscle use and using 17 groups of muscles takes coordination. Golf also can burn lots of calories. If you play a nine-hole course without a golf cart and no catty (someone who carries clubs for you), you walk 2-2.5 miles and you burn 721 calories. Professionals play in a four day tournament where they play 18 holes each day. After the tournament, they would be burning around 5,000 calories in total. This
Golf is a sport of confidence, honesty, and patience. It has taught me to practice these traits in my everyday life. I have more confidence in myself and I know that I will succeed. I am honest even when the truth hurts. I am patient with those around me no matter how annoyed I may be. My name is Evin Edens, and golf is my passion.
The amount of contact in each sport is a prime example. In football, it is impossible to avoid physical contact, as it is a very aggressive sport with hard hits occurring every play. There is also a difference in the type of injuries within each sport. In football, injuries are much more severe. According to Head Case Company, football is the leading sport in concussions (“Sports Concussion Statistics”). It is common to have injuries in upper and lower limbs and in the torso and pelvis (“Sports Concussion Statistics”). There is also a difference in training between the two sports. Daily, our football practices consist of intense running drills, weight lifting, hitting and blocking drills, and many team building activities (BE3). When contrasting physical demands of football with golf, an obvious difference is that in golf there is no contact with opponents. There are also minor injuries that are common due to repetitive motions in the shoulder and elbow. Training for golf is much less strenuous, as it focuses more on muscle memory. Meticulous changes are often made to the swing and grip, and a sweat typically isn’t broken. Golf training heavily focuses on precision and
