“Ethics are the principals by which people distinguish what is morally right”. (Certo, 2010, p .98). Ethics are about making choices that may not always feel good or seem like they benefit you but are the right choices to make.
While it is impossible to list all forms of conduct that might be considered appropriate or inappropriate, certain actions, such as theft, physical violence, falsifying records, bribery and threats of violence are clearly unacceptable at any workplace. Behavior that demands, disrespects, or discriminates against any clients is likewise unacceptable.
Supervisors or leaders responsibility is to create an environment that communicates organizational Core Values. They need to be committed to make this as part of the natural conversation that occurs in every office, every unit and part of every day. In my leadership I would incorporate my own ethical values (being moral, honest, trustworthy, and reliable) setting examples for others to imitate. Ethics are the principles and values used by an individual to govern his or her actions and decisions and it is very important in an organization. The code of ethics within an organization must be developed to help guide the organization in its decisions, programs, and policies. Having an ethical organizational culture that consists of leaders and employees adhering to ethical standards can guide leaders in determining organizational procedures and outline acceptable behavior among staff. Ethical leaders can also help employees meet standards of good quality work, accomplish organizational goals, adhere to policies and rules within the organization, and enhances the organization reputation within the community.
German Philosopher, Immanuel Kant once said, “In law a man is guilty when he violates the rights of others. In ethics he is guilty if he only thinks of doing so” (1800). The word ethics refers to “character” and “conduct” (Northouse, 2015, p. 330). It is deeply “concerned with the virtuousness of individuals and their motives” and “the kinds of values and morals an individual or a society finds desirable or appropriate” (Northouse, 2015, p. 330). Thus, “in regards to leadership, ethics is concerned with what leaders do and who leaders are” (Northouse, 2015, p. 330). Ethics in leadership allows leaders to make decisions regarding what is virtuous or not in a situation. All throughout the history of American government, difficult decisions have been made and the fight for ethics has always been “implicitly or explicitly involved” (Northouse, 2015, p. 330).
Ethics essentially refers to a set of rules or guidelines that defines what is right and wrong and therefore shape behavior of an individual or group. There is no specific definition of the term ethics; however it is usually mentioned in terms of good or bad. An ethical issue is present in a situation when a particular action or actions of any individual or organization may harm or benefit others. In organizations ethical behavior leads to good governance. However, what is considered ethical by one person may not be considered ethical by another.
Every individual has certain values and ethics that he/she stands by. Values give us a sense of what is important while ethics gives us a sense of what is right and wrong. Together, these qualities help guide us through our everyday life: what actions to take and what decision to make. Although I have many core values, including diligence, happiness, helpfulness, true friendship, freedom, and intelligence, the most significant in my life are love, morality, honesty, and forgivingness. Throughout my life, these particular values have proved key to becoming the person I wished to be. “The term leadership involves our self-images and moral codes” (Values in Leadership). In order to lead and to be someone who upholds their values, one must be fully aware of what is important to them and what drives them.
Ethics are the morals principles that we obtain through various means, such as religion, culture, etc., that people live by. Values are the way we feel about honesty, wrong-doing, etc. Ethics and values help determine the way employees and members of the business should act and how they should act to show how what the business stands for.
