Some view their Christian liberty as a license to sin. As Bible-believing Christians, we know this is absolutely not the case! Indeed, we are saved by grace, and not through our good works. But what happens when a Christian falls from the path, into his old ways? A Calvinist would say that a true believer cannot lose his salvation, while an Arminian would say that one can lose his salvation (Dunham 41). The purpose of this paper is to look at the issue of eternal security, and to determine whether “once saved, always saved” does hold true, or whether a Christian can lose his salvation.

Eternal Security

The definition of eternal security, or perseverance of the saints, is defined in the Moody Handbook of Theology as “The Calvinistic doctrine of the believer’s security. Those whom Christ chose and died for are eternally secure in their salvation; they can never fall away or be lost once they are saved (Enns 643)”. The Arminian counterpart of this doctrine is commonly called conditional perseverance, which states that “Believers have been empowered to live a victorious life, but they are capable to turning from grace and losing their salvation (Enns 495). ”
First, let us look at the Calvinistic view of eternal security. To support this view, Calvinists will use such verses as John 10:28, which says “…I will give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of my hand”. Another common verse used is Romans 8:1: “Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” These verses support the belief that, as the Moody Handbook of Theology words it, “Since salvation is a result of grace, with the believer being chosen from the foundation of the world, being redeemed...

From Fear to Love: Motivations in the Christian Search for God Essay - With weary eyes, wretched souls, and wounded hearts, people pray to God for deliverance. Throughout salvation history, in times of suffering, grief, and strife, fear motivates people to seek refuge in God. Simultaneously, love inspires people to remain steadfast in God, trusting that, “All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well” (Julian 80). Both fear and love dynamically shape the Christian search for God. The following essay will, firstly, examine how Israel’s state of fear and oppression in Exodus, in contrast with John’s assurance of love, shapes understandings of God; secondly, explore how fear “pushes” and love “pulls” Augustine closer to God; thi...   [tags: augustine, Martin Luther]

Eternal Security of the Believer Essay - Of all the past and present theological debates within Orthodox Christianity, few have managed to claim the perpetual debate as has the discussion surrounding the eternal security of the believer. For many generations, faithful Christians have stood on opposite sides of this issue, decrying the view of those standing opposite them. Broadly, some view the Bible as teaching that a man who has experienced a genuine conversion can, by his own will, turn from the faith and forfeit his salvation. The opposing view counters that this same man cannot, under any circumstances, forfeit his salvation after having experienced a genuine conversion....   [tags: Literature Review] 1406 words

Paul Constructed the Road to Salvation in the Romans Essays - ... It isn’t until the death of our physical bodies that we truly able to live. It is our eternal life with God that we are striving for. “For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live” (Romans 8:13 ESV). Those who find salvation through Christ, in essence, shed their human identities for a new body engulfed in the Spirit of God. Although we have been saved, sin still exists. We still have to deal with it, even in our salvation....   [tags: bible, God, Christian]

How Christians Define Grace Essay - ... This sovereignty means that all things given to the creation must come from, and be managed by, the Creator. Once we understand that grace is something that God, and God alone gives freely, then we can begin to understand how all human life is dependent upon it. This is because all of mankind is sinful and, because of that sin, has no right to life and should be dead. The Bible tells us, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Rom. 3.23), and "for the wages of sin is death" (Rom....   [tags: god, christ, eternal life] 1190 words

Christianity: Salvation by Grace Essay - Christianity is a faith based on the life, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. (Fisher, 1991) Christianity is a one God religion as presented in the New Testament. Today, Christianity and the church are culturally diverse, even in the aspects of race. It is even said that Sunday mornings is the most segregated time in the world. There is one central belief that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, all Christians can come to this conclusion. Christianity teaches that Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins and that we are all under the judgment of God because we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God....   [tags: Religion Christian]

Salvation Through Sacrifice Essay - In the Christian religion, like many others, the belief in a single, ultimate, powerful being is upheld and practiced. However, unlike other monotheistic religions, the Christian belief in God is expressed in three parts: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This aspect of Christianity is very unique and is part of what defines it. Although some people may think so, God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are not three separate beings. They are united as one in the Trinity, the same all-powerful God. God is the creator of all and the reason for our salvation as humans....   [tags: Christian religion, single powerful being]

Christian Discipleship Essay - Research Paper: Discipleship Because I became a Christian at an early age, there are many terms and ideas used in the church that I never pondered upon; I simply accepted them. For example, the term "disciple" I identify as one of Jesus' twelve closest followers, one of the paper characters placed on the felt board during Sunday school. Through my research, I have discovered that while accepting Christ through faith alone grants us salvation, to become a disciple of Christ, or practice discipleship, requires work and commitment from the believer....   [tags: Religion Christian] 996 words
