Engineering is an occupation that deals with the building and designing of new or improved products. To succeed in the field you have to skills in science, math and technology. You must also be able to look at problems from a creative perspective to solve them. The unique challenge this poses is what draws me to the field.
A world-class engineering student, also known as an “expert learner,” is characterized by taking charge of their learning process, being active in their approach to learning, being motivated and disciplined as well as setting specific goals for themself. Becoming a world-class engineering student is a process that takes time and diligence. In order to become a world-class engineering student, I will have to identify where I stand currently in terms of goal setting, community building, academic development and personal development, where a world-class engineering student would be in each of those areas, and what I have to do in order to become a world-class engineering student.
Engineering is an important and learned profession. As members of this profession, engineers are expected to exhibit the higher standards of honesty and integrity. Engineering has a direct and vital impact on the quality of life for all people. Accordingly, the services provided by engineers require honesty, impartiality, fairness, and equity, and must be dedicated to the protection of then public health, safety, and welfare. Engineer must perform under a standard of professional behavior that requires adherence to the highest principles of ethical conduct.
When trying to design for automated construction systems, all parameters of a construction process must be integrated accurately and constantly to satisfy relevant parties, and finally, the quality of construction materials and products in terms of geometry, physical and design aspects will be changed. In order to reach automated construction goals, all the following aspects have to be fulfilled:
Building structure and bridge structure, though built with well-considered design, may still have structural problem or even collapse with time. In this regard, the designer of the structure, which is the civil engineer, may have to bear of responsibility of professional negligence. Nonetheless, most of the engineers should be professional and have followed good control of structure quality, code of practice and good on-site supervision, despite the structure built may fail after the construction. To defense themselves, engineers involved should focus on their legal responsibility on the structure and other factors that lead to the failure of the structure.
In this essay I shall consider whether the primary goal of a course on engineering should be to teach students the standards of professional conduct as set out by major engineering codes of ethics, or if they should think autonomously about moral issues.
Engineering ethics focuses on the behavior of the individual - the engineer, and the development of ethical standards governing their professional activities. Engineering ethics has always existed as a set of rules or a system that governs the behavior of an engineer. Among its main provisions, we can attribute such as the need to faithfully perform engineering work that would bring welfare and do not cause harm to people; be accountable for engineering professional activities; a good relationship ( customs and rules governing relations ) with other engineer, etc.
Engineers have an ethical responsibility to do their service to protect the public. An engineer needs to poses certain virtues and be of good character in order do what is best not for him/her but for the public, which he/she is serving. Virtue ethics allows for the judgment of an engineer’s professionalism and character. For this reason these virtues are necessary in engineers. An engineer needs to be honest, needs to be accountable, and have a positive attitude.
The statistic of accidents at construction sites proofs that Malaysian construction industry is one of the critical sectors that need to take the site safety practices seriously. Accident is not a natural incidence. It happens because of unsafe acts, unsafe conditions or both. In general, accidents are a combination of contributing causes, unsafe acts and unsafe condition. The root causes of construction accidents is the main thing that need to be highlighted in order to improve the overall safety performance. That knowledge could be utilised to be more conducive working conditions and environments at construction sites. Therefore, a study has been conducted to identify the causes of accident at construction sites. This study was started out by reviewing literature from journals, books, newspaper, and web pages. Then reported accidents cases kept by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health Malaysia (DOSH) were examined to investigate causes of accidents. Surveys using questionnaire forms were carried out to obtain data from respondents who are mainly contractors and the rest are developers and consultants firms all around countries that are well versed with the construction safety. The finding of this study reveals that accidents are the result of many contributing factors, causes, and sub causes. Some of the critical factors are unsafe method, human element, unsafe equipment, job site conditions, management, and unique nature of the industry. The causes of accidents in Malaysia were found to be similar to that mentioned in literature review. However, some of the causes are low in frequency of occurrence. All these subjects were pondered about how these challenges can be overcome are there effective methods that engineers can apply today. Unfortunately, not all problems are easy to handle.
Obstacles had never been obstructing my effort to succeed in life. As an engineer to be, it is important to me to be prepared for the hurdles in the real world. The world nowadays needs a person who could compete and has great abilities to stand on the same level as others. Multiple skills and critical opinion of an issue are essential for an engineer to jump into this challenging career. For me, a strategic planning and full preparation need to achieve the aim of being an expert engineer.
