A seven year-old child lives in China with his mother. This childs name is moonshadow. Moonshadow’s father lives in the United States which Moonshadow calls the land of the golden mountain. He beleivs that the “demons” (white people) live there. Moonshadow has never seen his father because before Moonshadow was born his father started a kite company in the United States to earn some money to benefit them. My eldest sister was a professional cheerleader. My second eldest sister rode horses and speaks fluent Spanish. My third sister played three instruments, crocheted, drew, and cooked. Even my younger brother was in the choir and played cello. I was in the middle. I felt like I had no skills. I can’t cheer, nor can I ride horses or speak another language fluently. My cooking is sub-par, and my skills as a violinist were… underdeveloped. I would always be seated in the back row of the second violins, the lowest of the low. All theses reasons contributed to why I didn’t join the color guard for three years, even after being constantly pressured and supported by the instructor. I would tell them that my knee hurt too much, or that it was too much money, however, the reality was I was too self conscious, too scared of failure to even try.
The brooches in Oedipus Rex are used to inform the theme of fate. Its purpose is to separate the main character, Oedipus, from blindness in the physical world and seeing the truth in the psychological world. Up until he uses the brooches as his blinding mechanism, Oedipus’s perception of his life is false. His life story appears to be a fortunate and prosperous one as King of Thebes and he never recognizes the unavoidable events as his given prophecy. Even with the ability to see, he fails to trust in the gods and instead has false consciousness in his intuitions. As in Oedipus, Iokaste also exults over the failure of the oracles when in fact they prove right. The dramatic irony is prevalent every time a character tries to avert a future prediction; the audience knows the attempt is futile. With the use of the brooches, Oedipus “sees” his fate and acknowledges his avoidance of the truth. The tragic ending shows Oedipus accepting the prophecy he was unable to acknowledge in the past. In other words, the brooches cause the final darkness that was ultimately meant to happen.

Since being a member of the color guard team for the last year, I’ve wanted to continue to help the team by making sure that we are working our hardest and loving the sport. I believe that loving the sport comes first. If you don’t love color guard the rewards won’t come. Hard work and dedication is what makes a team go from good to great. As a team, we need to strive to be great. This year we have come so far and I want to help us to continue to work hard and fly high.
As a child growing up, I always knew I did not see colors the same way other kids did. It was not until I was older, and had an eye injury, that it was realized that I was color blind. When I would tell my peers that I was color blind I always got questions like, “What color is my shirt?” and “What color is the sky?’ These questions soon became annoying, and I stopped telling people I was color blind because I do see colors. I have problems distinguishing between the colors blue and purple, red and green, red and orange, green and brown, and so on. It is the hues that are a problem for me
After the civil war, newly freed slaves faced many challenges. Whites, especially in the south, regarded blacks as inferior more than ever before. The black codes were just one obstacle the freed slaves had to overcome. They were laws that were passed in the southern states that had the intent and the effect of restricting African Americans freedom. These laws made it possible for the south to regain control over the black population in much of the same ways they had before. The black codes effected reconstruction, and even today’s society in many ways.
Appearing in the 1903, The Souls of Black folk had emerged, a collection of 14 proses, written by one of the single most intellectual blacks in America, W. E.B. DuBois (Oxford Companion). This dynamic collection of essays reflect on African American history, sociology, religion, politics, and music. DuBois begins saying “The problem of the 20th century is the color line (5). This quote pronounces DuBois bases for his collection, that is being different form the others (Whites) makes you feel like you are being shut out from their world by a vast veil; hence the color line(8). On the other had we have Birth of a Nation, which comes out later in 1915 (TCM). Ironically it becomes the top selling film in White America during that time, but degrades everything that DuBois and another activist stood for. While DuBois hopes to educate White and Black America on their boundaries, the color line, the film’s director, D.W. Griffith, undermines these ideas. Defiling images of African Americans by distorting the perception of Blacks using stereotypical examples such as the mammies, mulattos, and bucks, Griffith tries to justify that blacks were inferior to Whites. In spite of the many controversies that are expressed in the film, it had become a known as the most innovative, American Epics and was a top seller during its time because of Griffith’s technical breakthrough and format. While comparing and contrasting these two pieces I hope to reveal to you this why this ‘double consciousness’ exist, even todays society as a result of these stereotypes displayed in “The Birth of a Nation.”

Since freshman year I've participated in color guard, which is hand in hand with marching band; more specifically my schools band program , The Highlander Band. Color guard was my way to find my group of friends throughout my highschool career; from kids at my school or other kids in different states or districts, i've forged many relationships through this sport. While it takes up a lot of time in and out of school, from practices before and after school, performing at contests and football games, and having week long summer rehearsals; I continue to show interest in returning every year due to the extravagant performances we do and the fun times i've shared.. Albinism in hair, skin, and eyes is called oculocutaneous albinism. Humans that have oculocotaneous albinism are not able to produce melanin. These people have white, yellow, or yellow brown hair, very light ( usually blue ) eyes, and very pale skin. Their eyes may appear pink because they have very little pigment.
