a. To the rest of the world, Sierra Leone is a third world country that was known for its devastating blood diamonds war. b. To me, it is home where I was born and the rest of my family is from. Imagine learning French at school, speaking English on the streets, speaking your parent’s ethnic language at home and speaking krio with your friends. These are one of the astonishing qualities of the Sierra Leone culture. c. Sierra Leone has many unique features that make it a culturally flavored country with multiple ethnic groups’ of people, tropical climate, rich history, food and customs. II. The Country a. Sierra Leone’s official name is the Republic of Sierra but it is also known as Salone by the people. b. It is a small country off the West Coast of Africa that is bordered by Liberia, Guinea, and the Atlantic Ocean. c. The climate of Sierra Leone is tropical, with two seasons that determine the agricultural cycle, the rainy season, from May to November and dry season, from December to April. d. The country features palm-fringed beaches, breathtaking mountains, tropical rainforests and vibrant culture. e. People from the western area often associate the tall cotton tree, white sandy beaches, or the large natural harbor with home; people from the east often think of coffee and cocoa plantations. f. Sierra Leone is also rich in minerals, including diamonds, gold, bauxite, rutile and iron ore. III. The History a. Sierra Leone has been inhabited continuously for at least 2,500 years. b. In 1462, a Portuguese explorer named Pedro da Cintra gave the country the name “Serra de Leão” which is Portuguese for mountain lion and its Italian name Sierra Leone became the country’s name. c. On the streets, you can find vendors selling fresh mangoes, fruits, vegetables, meats, seafood and chicken bones. VII. Conclusion a. Sierra Leone is one of West Africa’s most seductive destinations nation because of its beautiful scenery, rich history, amazing delicacies, and a growing economy. b. Sierra Leone has a unique culture of people, economics, and land that makes it diverse and continuously progressing. c.
