“Love in LA” is a short story written by Dagoberto Gilb. The story is written in third person point of view. The author is an American writer that writes extensively. He was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. His mother came from across the Mexican border, yet his father is from Kentucky. Gilb’s parents were also raised in parts of Los Angeles. His mother’s home was in Downtown, while his father resided in Boyle Heights. His parents’ careers were vastly different his mother was a model and later a dental assistant, while his father made a living off of an industrial laundry business. When he was a child, his parents divorced, and he remained living with his mother. After Gilb graduated high school he went to multiple community colleges, then he transferred to the University of California. He majored in Philosophy and Religious Studies. Before Dagoberto became the prominent writer he is now he worked in many construction-like jobs. His writing career began when he was inspired by Raymond Carver who was near his school teaching others. Olib begins the short story describing Jake’s personal qualities and characteristics. The narrator continues to tell the reader about his internal conflict. Jake constantly strives for high-end items in his dreams.As he drove in the midst of the traffic jam he started imaginingb “Exotic colognes, plush, dark nightclubs, maitais and daiquiris, necklaced ladies in satingowns, misty and sexy like in a tequila ad.” The setting of the story is based in the foggy morning of LA streets’ traffic jam. Jake is driving in his old Buick and Mariana is cruising in front of Him in her Toyota. All in all, the reader was presented with many descriptions of Jake’s personality. “Love in LA” is about a lazy ... ... middle of paper ... ...nally, the falling action begins when Jake retrieves Mariana’s number. He is ecstatic because he has avoided giving her all of his real information, and he was also very sexually attracted to her. The story ends with Mariana driving away without Jake’s valid information. All in all, I believe that this incident was a positive experience for Jake. He appeared to be the dynamic character because he developed immensely throughout the tale. In the story it stated that he was so busy thinking about his “freedom” that when he finally looked up ahead, but it was too late and he had already hit the other car. After the panic, lies, attraction, and deception that occurred Jake made it without harm due to the distress that his lack of documentation brought. This lead to him maturing, and wanting to better himself for the future in order to achieve what he often dreams about.
