Over the years a lot of people use internet for many reasons. One website used a lot is YouTube. YouTube can have positive impacts, as well as negative impacts.
YouTube contains a lot of narcissism, adult footage, and racism.
One of the reasons YouTube has a negative impact on society is narcissism. Narcissism is when people are excessively interested in themselves, to the point that they think they’re able to get famous. “The internet’s democratization of access to publicity makes everyone feel like they are able on the level of celebrity; able to tweet their favorite stars, put up a website about themselves and post photos of themselves on social media (Rachel).” Now a day a lot of people want to become famous. “Everyone wants to be a star and the advent of YouTube and social media has made it appear to be readily attainable (Rachel).” As a result, people think that putting videos and images on YouTube could make them famous, in which in some occasions it could be possible.
Another reason why YouTube contains a lot of narcissism is because people want to become popular, and they do stuff to promote themselves. “Narcissisms appear as a necessity in a society of the spectacle, which runs from Andy Warhol’s, “15 minute of fame” prediction, though reality television and self-promotion to YouTube hits (Allen).” People think of promoting themselves they’re able to become popular for one reason or another. “Unabashed self-portraiture has a purely formal side, which seems to have escaped recent discussions about photography. Today, no one bothers to use the remote shutter trigger or even the timer to make a self-portrait (Allen).” Clearly people now a day promote themselves ...

In conclusion, I think that all of these cause YouTube a negative impact. But the one that causes more of an impact would be adult footage. Well, at least for me it is, because narcissism and racisms are less of an impact than pornography.

Those videos can even be shared on other forms of social media like Facebook and Twitter. According to The Telegraph’s article How YouTube changed the world, they state that “The online video behemoth has become the world’s third most-visited website, after Google and Facebook” (How YouTube changed the world). This website has thousands of videos that anyone with access to the it and internet can view. In the same article, they explain that Youtube has been the birthplace of some celebrities in the music, fashion, and video game scenes. (How YouTube changed the world). Because of how easy it is for a person to watch these videos and share them from all across the world, American culture, and other cultures can be spread to each other. With its recommendation feature I am able to see an endless amount of videos that are similar to what I already watch.For instance,If my history is filled with videos of animals then my recommendation page will be clustered with alike animal content. YouTube works like a memory card that saves all the things that I can learn from and get ahead of. With today's culture, things become in demand only to be forgotten about in days to come. Objects like fidget spinners and emoji merchandise are considered the coolest things until everyone has one. Modern washed out pop culture like pointless TV shows-that create dramatic plots with resolutions that could have been avoided from the beginning- don’t mean a lot to me either. Even if YouTube is apart of popular culture, some of it’s content and users have proven to be genuine and inspire me to do more of the things I love. Narcissistic behavior is characterized by an unrealistic sense of superiority, a compulsive need for admiration, and a complete lack of empathy for others (Narcissism). Social media platforms offer the opportunity for self-promotion and large numbers of shallow relationships which are both linked to narcissism. Do we value online popularity the same way or more than we value real-life interactions? How could this affect the mental health of those who use these networking sites? Is this kind of online community promoting more narcissistic people in the community? So many questions. I’m not alone in asking these questions.
In Hans Christian Anderson’s 1830s fairy tale Thumbelina, the narrator brings Thumbelina or Tiny for short, on a series of misfortunate events. An ugly toad stole Thumbelina and tried to marry her to her even more unsightly son. After she escaped the toad, a cockchafer forced her to be his date to a party, almost perished in the lonely winter months, and again is nearly forced to marry an unappealing mole. Although after a rainstorm of bad events, a rainbow appears. After Tiny’s tragic events, Tiny is finally wed to a handsome, fairy prince. Tiny’s character traits and build carried the story. Although a few characters drove the tale of Thumbelina by Hans Christian Anderson, Thumbelina’s small delicate stature influenced the story the most, because it led to the toad stealing her, almost marrying the mole, and marrying the fairy prince.
The Internet has become a major tool for communication and access to information for over two and half billion people (Wright 121). Although Internet has become an unavoidable reality that is consuming our planet in a web of information. This process is being shaped by our actions and choices which ultimately drives us together (Deibert 11). Nowadays China has over 538 million netizens, the world’s largest online community (Feng & Guo 335).
Recent advancements in technology have created a new form of communication. We call this new type of communication social media. Some of the big names in social media are Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram. Most people today use some form of social media on a daily basis. Social media is most popular amongst adolescents. According to a poll conducted by Infographic, nine out of ten teenagers have used social media. Whenever a new technological advancement occurs there is concern over how it will affect society. In the case of social media, the concern is greatest for adolescents. So, how does social media effect adolescents? Social media can have both negative and positive effects. Some of the effects of using social media can be depression, addiction, cyberbullying and exposure to inappropriate content.
Since the development of the Internet in late 1980s, communication has changed enormously. The Internet has altered the lives of people in the world in a way that was never imagined before. As little as a decade ago, if someone tried to explain the Internet and World Wide Web, it would have been difficult, if not impossible, to understand. Computers were just beginning to become popular and few individuals realized the capacity of one PC, let alone the power of a network of electronic technology. By linking together computers, users could remotely access others on the network, share information, and send electronic mail as easily as pushing a button. Millions of people with shared interests, exchange information and build communities through Web sites, email and instant-messaging software.
The internet has come along way since its birth back in 1969, from its start as a government network to the everyday life; it has proven to be one of the greatest inventions ever discovered. It has helped many people with an array of task ranging from everyday government usage, and personal web pages to the ever so expanding horizons of technology still being produced today. Between the good and the bad, the internet has improved the way of life, and will continue to improve throughout time.

As a whole, this phenomenon that expands each day can be seen as a sort of epidemic that infects the minds of the general population via the media.
