Perhaps because the country is an island country and has four different seasons, Japan has really delicate and unique culture such as its clothes. A japanese word “kawaii” is now getting known by non-japanese speakers, and it is not rare today to see people wearing kimono pajama in a book or during TVshow. Over a thousand year, japanese culture changed by getting influenced by other countries and economic states. This research will focus on why it has changed over a time, and what factors have influenced it.

kimono changed greatly over time. It was first appeared in 7th century. During the Heian period 794-1185, the custom of elaborate layers of colored kimono robes became popular among Japanese women. This is not exactly what we call kimono today, but until this period of times, japanese clothes were quite similar to Chinese traditional clothes. (History of Kimono) Then during the Kamakura period of 1185-1133 with the rising influence of Samurais( japanese soldiers), people had no patience or need for elaborate and complicated kimono so it got even simpler. Heian kimono needed a lot of layers and underwears that it was sometime more than 30kg heavy. The demand for lighter, simpler kimono got higher and higher among samurais, especially this period is known as “the age of civil war” in japanese history. (Brief History of Japanese clothes) During the Edo period, people began to define their status by their kimono clothing. The edo period is one of the most peaceful period of Japanese history, therefore a wide variety of gorgeous, colourful kimono was born during this period. ... their workers to wear Kimono such as workers of old Japanese restaurants in Kyoto and Geisha. Common people also wear it but only when there are special events such as festival, funerals, weddings. This occurred mainly because of westernization and industrialization. Does a similar thing happen to other country? and do you consider this as a danger of tradition or in more positive way? Futher research is needed for these questions.
