Business Ethics There are countless examples of businesses that have either good or bad ethical business practices. These examples show worldviews that are altruistic and self-serving as well the cause-and-effect of either decision. This paper will identify examples of both good and bad ethical practices as well relate them to various worldviews. Good Ethical Practices It is reasonable to believe that ethical business behavior has countless advantages and few, if any, disadvantages. Consumers have almost immediate access, via the Internet, to a company’s business practices so purchasing decisions can be fluid. This means good ethical business practices can have immediate reward from consumers. For seven years no Ethisphere Institute has published a list of the world’s most ethical companies. The list is developed through extensive surveys and research covering a broad range of categories. 2013 produced 138 companies ranging across virtually all types of industry. Although, motives for companies to be a part of this list might be organic to their mission statements, there are still many other advantages. Smith states, “Brigham says that recognition on the WME list has proven to be beneficial in various ways for the winners.” (para 9). Starbucks Coffee Company is on the Ethisphere Institute 2013 list. Starbucks was founded in 1971 and today there are almost 20,000 stores worldwide with tens of thousands employed. Starbucks has many ethically sound practices; however, of particular note is their treatment of employees. Starbucks has very progressive incentives offered to an employee population that is often not included. Starbucks has a full range of benefits offered for part-time employees as well as full-time. Within the Bible we, as believers, have the answers to our ethical dilemmas. Business leaders have a choice when making decisions of what worldview to adopt to guide their organizations. The leader who choses the Bible as their starting point will be better prepared to make sound ethical decisions that have lasting impact. Conclusion In conclusion, our worldviews are formed throughout our lives by multiple different influences. However, understanding our own personal worldview’s and how they influence our decision-making is critical. As leaders, or future leaders, we can take use our experience and education, coupled with a biblical foundation to make better personal and professional ethical decisions.
