Society’s main goal is to advance, but throughout the ages, barriers have hindered that progression. Gender and race have been the two biggest battles that society has faced. Traditional gender roles, ethnic diversity, and job opportunities are all effected by double standards. Along with those, the media, and politics are greatly influenced by discrimination and contradiction. Double standards impede progress in society.
Traditional gender roles no longer exist. The age old pastimes of women doing the dishes and men bringing home the paycheck is gone with the wind. In a recent poll 74 percent of people rejected the idea that women should return to traditional gender roles.(j2of2) During WWII woman had to take over jobs that were consider to be male oriented. While the men were off fighting in battle the women were fabricating munitions for the war effort. This was the start of a new era where women would bring home the income. Ever since, 40 percent of women have become the breadwinners of the family.(j 1of2). Women have also been fighting traditional gender roles when it comes to education. Women now have the same educational opportunities that men have. Previously the men of the family were to be educated and women were to support them by means of househould labor. Some might say gender roles no longer exist, but perhaps they are not looking hard enough.
Traditional gender roles are still present and primarily hold back progress in society. In certain christianity denominations such as orthodoxy and catholicism only men are allowed to be priests or senior leaders like pope or bishops. The media has a tendency to twist and turn facts and resultingly become very biased.
Society is being held back by a multitude of things, one of which is double standards. Double standards in gender roles, race, the workplace, politics and the media all play an important role in the suppression of progress in society. The evidence not only shows that double standards are still in existence but that they impede the advancement of society. Double standards are seen in everyday circumstances, whether or not society decides to stop the progression of these contradictions and discriminations will determine the outcome of society itself.
