This summer I red the book You Have A Brain, by Dr. Ben Carson. I was inspired to read this book since Dr. Ben Carson is running as a republican candidate for the 2016 presidential election. I wanted to know more about Carson’s background, and any political views of his that I could judge him by. I also really enjoy reading books about how to improve yourself. On the cover of the book, it says A Teens Guide To Think Big. I thought to myself since I am entering my junior year, the climax of a High school education, why not see what this book has to offer. One of the most noticeable elements Carson included in his book was the motif, “You have a brain.” Throughout the book, Carson brings up various instances in his life when he realized he needed to use his brain. He uses the phrase early in the book when he and his brother shot BB pellets at tin cans, not realizes they were firing in the direction of their neighbor’s porch. The source of this motif came from Carson’s mother. “But boys, you are both smart. You need to use the brains God gave you and learn to think beyond the can (Carson 15)!” She believed that the human brain is a valuable resource that all humans …show more content…

Ben Carson had many problems that most juveniles face in growing up. One of the challenges he battled was his anger. There are numerous instances of life where he loses control over his anger, and almost makes a fatal move. He attempted to stab his friend for changing the radio station he was listening to, and nearly struck his mother with a hammer for buying him ugly school pants that were not in fashion. The second problem that Carson faced while growing up was fitting in. When he was in the fifth grade, he was labeled the dumbest kid in the class and was quite embarrassed of it. Carson starting reading books and improved his intelligence, which lead to his next problem of being modest. Carson had to let all the other students know how smart he was, and what he was capable
