Summary- Japanese police are readying themselves for a potential war between the yakuza group called the Yamaguchi-gumi and a group of Yamaguchi-gumi defectors and other small gangs calling themselves the Kobe Yamaguchi-gumi. The Yamaguchi-gumi is the largest Yakuza group in Japan, with over 35,000 members, (around 23,000 after the split) making up around 50% of all gangsters in Japan. They have an annual profit over the billions in U.S dollars every year. The yakuza group tries to stick to white collar crime but also deals in the trafficking of illegal goods. They do not believe in drug dealing in Japan, although it is fair game in other countries. Like many other Yakuzas, they operate like a giant corporation in their corporate offices …show more content…

He does this by using a gang he founded called the Kodo-kai. This angers the group because they don’t want to spread themselves thin and keep close to the west in Kobe, where their home territory is. Analysis- The two people mentioned in the article is the founder of the Yamaguchi-Gumi, Harukichi Yamaguchi and the current head of the gang, Shinobu Tsukasa/Kenichi Shinoda. Harukichi is only mentioned when the writer was giving background information about the gang, he was a fisherman on the island of Awaji. The article gives more detail on the sixth head Tsukasa, detailing his two arrests, his lust for blood, power, and wealth. I feel that there will be follow up on this event, as the gangs war unfolds and progresses. I am also interested in the Yakuza. They also have/had a code of honour where they would not commit crimes or disrupt anything during sporting events or other important …show more content…

The Japanese government may ask for additional officers from other countries to keep the peace, weakening our own defensive force and police. It can also cause the production of products to slow down or stop as the gangs wage their wars. People will be too afraid to go to work. Businesses and people alike can be dragged into the war as well. It will also deter people from visiting Japan as the war will deter people from setting foot on the island, causing a decrease in tourism profits for the country and less people going to Japan. The gang fight may possibly even spread to other countries the Yamaguchi-Gumi reside. I do not think there is any bias in this article. It gives a lot of background information about the Yamaguchi-gumi and their leader. I believe they did this because not because they admire them but because many people do not know about them, even though they are one of the world's largest organized crime group. The article states facts and police assumptions/preparations. I have confirmed these are truthful by looking at other articles, which share the same facts.
