Before we can dive into any story, we must look at the world in which it is set. In this peculiar world, there is an end to the Earth, where the waters of the seas fall off into an unending chasm. Above the Earth lies the sky that holds the celestial bodies and beyond that, an expanse of white space that eventually gives way to the vault of heaven - a vast, enclosed chamber where the God Yahweh resides. The tower of Babylon is built as a portal to allow humans to explore Yahweh’s residence. The Babylonians have spent centuries building the incredibly tall, square tower with two winding, pillared ramps scored into its exterior so crews of cart-pullers can transport building material as well as food and other necessities required in the tower. …show more content…

This foreshadows Hillalum’s growing discontent with life on the tower. He feels disengaged with the Earth and seems not only homesick, but also afraid of the height at which they stand (not to be confused with altitude sickness because in this story, oxygen is of no concern). He pushes on regardless, and they move on to another struggle – the ascent up the sun-seared portion of the tower. The solution to this is a continuous wall along the exterior of the ramp that shields the climbers from the scorching heat. They are wary of hitting a reservoir in the vault, believing that one had unleashed the Deluge of the past that flooded Earth. Hence they plan to repeatedly heat (using fire) and cool (using water) the granite such that it cracks. While the first cavern created like this would entail a risk of opening a reservoir, they succeed and thereon, the Egyptians build safety measures that would seal the caverns when a reservoir is hit. As luck would have it, they strike a reservoir and the safety measures ironically trap our protagonist in a cavern. After some futile attempts to escape, Hillalum takes a deep breath and is surrounded by water. However when the water fills the cavern, he swim upwards towards the source of the water and loses
