With a democratic/ republican ratio of only .52, Wyoming is a republican state that was said to be the most conservative state according to Gallup polls. Even with the small population, the top three issues facing the state are drug use, immigration, and the environment.
Wyoming faces a concern with the use of drugs and alcohol. 77% of the residents of Wyoming would support a tax on alcohol going to treatment and prevention organizations. Drug use has become an important issue for Wyoming, and its population believes that it needs to solve the problem. In 2011 the national average of illegal drug use was 8.02%. The average of Wyoming was 6.82% with marijuana being the most used. Wyoming is also ranked as the worst state regarding the use of meth for ages 18 to 25. In late 2013, a man was found to have thirty-eight pounds of methamphetamine along with 25 guns. Regarding nighttime drivers, 12.5% tested positive for prohibited drugs. The federal grants given to the state are more for drug trafficking rather than prevention. A doctor in Wyoming has suggested that the government needs to spend more on prevention because it has proved to be more effective. The drug situation also exists in the neighboring northwest states. The marijuana issue is increasing due to the neighboring state, Colorado, which has legalized marijuana for ages twenty-one and up. Wyoming has passed a bill for drug testing. Colorado has not. Wyoming is working to lower drug abuse; it however, needs help from the federal government. In 2012, Wyoming was rated as the state with the highest suicide rate. Indeed, combating the drug problem can help lower the suicide rate.

Montana seems to be one of those states that most people either love or hate. It is so distinct from any other state that it is no wonder this is the case. Montana is in so many ways such a great state to live in, with a wide variety of recreation, hobbies, and other enjoyable pastimes; however, many problems plague the state, from its lack of modern conveniences to its poor job opportunities. What many people do not realize is how much these good and bad characteristics are related.
Utah is known to have the best snow on earth, we have beautiful scenery, relaxation and recreation all within minutes of our front door. But what about that dirty air that seems to last for months? Utah has four of the nations 100 largest oil fields, which produces 1.2% of the nation’s output, with 3,600 active wells. Utah ranks 11th in the nation of oil production, and we have five refineries in the Salt Lake area that can produce 175,500 barrels of oil per day (House,2012). The major effect of these practices, is the effect of air pollution along the Wasatch Front and the serious health consequences on children, teens and adults.
Loyalty is one of the ethics that is instilled in a person at a young age. Loyalty can range from loyalty to a family member, friend, teammate, ect. In Larry Watson's, Montana 1948, the summer of 1948 tests the loyalty of each character and is told through the eyes of a young boy, David. The picture was clear to David when Marie was Murdered. Through this tragic event David was able to read each family member determining whether they were loyal or whether they would betray.
In Annie Proulx’s work Close Range she tells stories that emphasize the rugged landscape of Wyoming and how it has shaped the characters in her short stories. In the short story “A Lonely Coast” Proulx uses the Narrator and her friend Josanna Skiles, as the models for what life is like for a single woman in the rugged, masculine, male-dominated culture of Wyoming. Josanna’s boyfriend Elk functions as the personification of the state of Wyoming, pushing Josanna to her limits until she snaps, just like the landscape of Wyoming pushes its residents to the point that they either leave or die there.
The State of Washington is located in the far northwest corner of the United States. It has 66,582 square miles between the Pacific Ocean on the west and the Idaho boarder to the east. Washington borders Canada on the north and Oregon on the south along the Columbia River.

Oklahoma's oil and natural gas industry is giving us unstoppable progress for energy solutions, but the other parts of the nation are still searching for theirs. While providing jobs for the thousands of people who live in Oklahoma, the oil and natural gas industry not only donates to America's petroleum production, but it also produces millions of dollars for our state’s economy, schools, and roads. Making new headways in our industry every day, artificial technology, scientific breakthroughs, adequate new exploration, and drilling methods took place. Without these upgrades, we would not be able to extract oil and natural gas from challenging fields more efficiently than we can now. As capability rises, environmental impact will continue to go down. In 1897, a tower of surging oil divided the Bartlesville sky. Oklahoma's preliminary drilling swaged badly, brought forth by the federal controls on wellhead prices of natural gas applied to interstate commerce in the 1950s. By 1982, oil prices hit an all time high of $37.60 per barrel. Furthermore, the number of progressive drilling rigs in Oklahoma also hit a record of 882. The total quantity produced from the soul and natural gas industry in Oklahoma reached about 40 billion dollars in 2007. Also, through the gross production tax, oil and natural gas producers and royalty owners gave more than 2 billion dollars to Oklahoma used for teacher retirement, public schools, wildlife management, bridges, roads, and state colleges.
