During World War I, many countries used a war tactic called trench warfare. This is where two opposing troops set up camp in trenches facing each other and fight. The land in the middle of them is called “No Man’s Land”. This war tactic was first made in the seventeenth century by a man known as Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban. It was the man defense tool during this war. Constructing the trenches was hard work for the soldiers. It took four hundred men six hours to build two hundred meters of trench along the Western Front After that they still have to add barbed wire, sand bags, and board walks. The same process happened when the sun set. Gunfire and shells would fly between trenches hoping to hit the opposing troop. Patrols from each side would be sent into the “No Man’s Land”. Some were tasked with fixing or adding the barbed wire to the front line of their claimed area. Others would go out to and try to listen in on the enemy and hoped to pick up some information that would help them in the war. Sometimes opposing patrols would meet in this area. They could then continue their journey separate ways or use hand to hand fighting. They could not use their guns while patrolling in No Man's Land because they will cause everyone to know where they were so they could be fired upon and kill everyone there. In the trenches, they used a variety of weapons. The most common guns were rifles and machine guns. Some troops also used gas to get rid of the other side. They had to be careful because if the wind blew the wrong direction, it could wipe out their troop instead of the opposing one. There was a decent amount of food in the trenches. Families from the homeland sent food packages to the soldiers. This often contained one pound of meat, bread and vegetables each day. This kept the soldiers healthy and gave them the nutrition and energy they needed to
