Who is the real bad guy in Wuthering Heights?
The story of Wuthering Heights makes you hate and love specific characters solely based on the biasness of the narrator. Nelly Dean (narrator) grew up alongside Hindley and Catherine Earnshaw and later goes to Thrushcross Grange in 1783 to act as Catherine's maid, and even stays on after Catherine’s death as a housekeeper. Given that Nelly Dean has been there for so long, she has witnessed a lot of drama and has strong feelings for the characters in her story, and it’s these feelings that complicate her narration. As the reader we are forced to rely on Nelly's flawed interpretation of events. When Nelly begins narrating to Lockwood, we don't get the real story, but rather Nelly Dean’s representation of the truth. Its Nelly’s influence that corrupts the reader just like her influence, in a way, corrupts the family. Nelly is always placed somewhere in every Earnshaw family situation. Edgar finds himself in a pretty screwed up love triangle, seeing that his is wife obviously in love with Heathcliff, and he can’t do anything about it. When compared to overly masculine Heathcliff, Edgar looks like a weakling unworthy of Catherine’s heart or attention. While some readers may sympathize with Edgar, there is no doubt that deep down we were all rooting for Catherine and Heathcliff to be together. Even though she marries Edgar, it’s largely because of her desire for his social status, but she does seem genuinely drawn to his physical appearance and demeanor. So Catherine at least partly loves Edgar, but it’s clear that her feelings for Edgar can never equal her feelings for Heathcliff. Compared with her passion for Heathcliff, her love for her husband seems, for lack of a better word,
