A Stolen Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard is an autobiography recounting the chilling memories that make up the author’s past. She abducted when she was eleven years old by a man named Phillip Garrido with the help of his wife Nancy. “I was kept in a backyard and not allowed to say my own name,” (Dugard ix). She began her life relatively normally. She had a wonderful loving mother, a beautiful baby sister,, and some really good friends at school. Her outlook on life was bright until June 10th, 1991, the day of her abduction. The story was published a little while after her liberation from the backyard nightmare. She attended multiple therapy sessions to help her cope before she had the courage to share her amazing story. For example she says, “My growth has not been an overnight phenomenon…it has slowly and surely come about,” (D 261). She finally began to put the pieces of her life back together and decided to go a leap further and reach out to other families in similar situations. She has founded the J A Y C Foundation or Just Ask Yourself to Care. One of her goals was, amazingly, to ensure that other families have the help that they need. Another motive for writing the book may have also been to become a concrete form of closure for Miss Dugard and her family. It shows her amazing recovery while also retelling of all of the hardships she had to endure and overcome. She also writes the memoir in a very powerful and curious way. She writes with very simple language and sentence structures. This becomes a constant reminder for the reader that she was a very young girl when she was taken. A research shows that “ America is very good at adopting new things and it’s a place that it’s ok to do what you want” but people should start finding happiness; they should realize what they are meant to do in this world. After living here for almost five years, my parents realized where they belong to and it’s their hometown of Hue, Vietnam. I hope that people find their real home like how my parents did. Aimee Bender’s “An Invisible Sign of My Own” is a coming of age story, in which the protagonist (Mona) is forced to adapt to change, moreover, this theme of change is prevalent throughout the narrative. Through use of dialogue and simplistic diction, the author effectively contextualizes the premise of the narrative within the introduction; essentially, the story is about a nineteen year old woman who is encouraged to move away from home and become gain a sense of independence within her life. Throughout the narrative, we witness a shift in Mona’s character. Though initially, she “love[s]” her home, and is hesitant to the notion of moving away, by the end of the story, she “settle[s] in,” having found “purpose” in her new home. Bender’s use
Seven years ago, I moved to United States. Like anyone who had welcomed changes in their life, I had a hard time dealing with my new situation. It’s very difficult to fit in. In my homeland, life is harsh with the great gap of poor and rich, but my family got everything. Our lives were plentiful. We were not prepared to face the changes and challenges in the United States. My mother didn’t know how to get a job or how my two older sisters would get into college. It was not the same life we had in the Philippines. We left our homeland while my two older sisters were college students. My parents didn’t know how to help them to pursue their future here so my parents decided to let my sisters return home to finish their education. As they graduated with degrees and awards, the truth is, I sincerely respect and admire my sisters dearly, but I don’t want to end up like my sisters who finished college with so numerous awards and can’t get the job she wants because her degree is from another country.

Reading and writing has always played a vital part in my life. From toddler to adult, pre-elementary to college, I’ve managed to sharpen both skills to my liking. However, even though it significantly helped, schooling was not what influenced me to continue developing those skills into talent. Many different things shaped and influenced my learning, and now reading and writing have become the safety net of my life. I know that even if I have nothing else in the future, I’ll still have my talent and knowledge. To ensure my success, I hope to further develop those skills so that I may fulfill my wishes.
All squeezed in the back of our red minivan with ´I Need To Know’ by Mark Anthony playing on the radio, my childhood took a halt. I was only three years old, but that rainy fall day in October would forever be remembered.
It is through the events in the journey of life that shapes and molds who we are as people. As for me, immigrating to America was one of those milestones that have shaped who I am. Those who have had the opportunity of moving from a different country to America know what a privilege it is. I felt the same honor to know that I would be journeying to the land of opportunity. Without hesitance, I spent the last two months packing and making the final preparations before moving to a new continent. Although it was a bittersweet time, leaving my beloved family behind, I knew that I couldn’t resist the treasure that waited for me in the new land. Coming from a developing nation the high level of sophistication that greeted me on arrival to America made feel like I was in paradise.
Nevertheless, contrary to his thinking, my decision was going to stay in the US although I had many problems in finance and language, and I’ve never regretted about my choice. My life now is the best evidence to prove that I was not wrong in my thinking. For example: I could find a good job to certainly of my benefit such as payment rent, or car. Also, I could save my time at school to improve knowledge and breaking down language barriers. Nobody denies, accomplishment now is the result of the process of striving after 4 years in the US, but I do not ever denied the help of my uncle because they give to me a new life in new country. My mom said, “The children must be grateful to those who helped them. Especially, if somebody makes you sad, then write it down on sand, and if they save your live, you must write it down on stone”. There have been very few events throughout my lifetime that I feel have impacted or inspired me with such noteworthiness and that I know will change my outlook on the world and affect me forever. One of those events occurred when I traveled to Portugal, my parent’s homeland. From this excursion in 2007, I learned the importance of family, most importantly the distant kind. It provided me with a totally different perspective on the world and how large and extended one’s family can really be; even across cultures and continents. I felt so fortunate learning this lesson at a young age and growing to appreciate the ideals I was brought up with as a child. The family I have in Portugal has always been there; however, their faces have aged and are blemished with the passing of many years and difficult times. Some newer additions to the family have started to become a part of the modern Portuguese workforce. One of my cousins was studying to become a veterinarian and another was working as a nurse at the local hospital of Montalegre (or “Happy Mountain”).
