A controversial topic today is whether or not body piercings and tattoos should be accepted by professionals working in health care. Currently, tattoos and piercings are allowed in health care as long as they are not visible. According to one of the studies, “Body piercing is defined as a piercing of the body anywhere other than the earlobes” (Westerfield). Therefore, the only visible piercings allowed are small studs in the lobes of the ears for females. It is crucial to not share plates, cups, and eating utensils to keep from passing bacteria. Using a salt water rinse and avoiding alcohol and spicy foods can also help decrease swelling and infection.

Men tend to get more masculine tattoos, while women tend to get more feminine ones (44). Even though it is seen as normal to get a tattoo today, most employers still have a problem with them. Most employers want their employees who are tattooed to cover them up so they are not visible on the job (46). Others view people with tattoos to be stupid and trouble makers (46). Tattoos as a social norm, proves that in some cases they are acceptable and in other cases, they still cause problems like stereotyping.

For instance, in the Bible, Abraham’s grandson, Jacob, told all the people to cast off all of their body piercing jewelry because it was displeasing to God. He said that people were making a temple of their body and worshipping themselves and their bodies were for God and not themselves. Now in the twenty-first century, it is mainly used for a trendy, rebellious look. No matter what reason you are doing it for, you are probably going to feel the pain from your choice.

These are just a few questions that have been raising a lot of debate in the past few recent years due to the increase of people having tattoos and piercings in more noticeable, and harder to cover up spots.
Body piercing in high schools definitely isn't a new subject to me. I have had many run-ins with my school administration about ear and other body piercings. Because of my multiple piercings in my ears, the counselor and the principle have told me before that I cannot have any body piercings. Under other circumstances, I might except that answer. However, since the school dress code does not touch on body piercings in the handbook they cannot say anything and therefore, I can have my body pierced anywhere that I want to and they cannot do anything about it.

This may be done for many reasons, which vary from person to person. Some do it for fun, some like the way it looks, others, mostly masochists, just like the pain. It serves as a source of self-satisfaction for them. A survey showed that between the ages of 18 to 50, 24% of the individuals have got piercings. The Northwestern University conducted a research and found out that out of all the people who get their body parts pierced, 76% are women. Also, it is to be noted that ear lobe piercing is the most common and popular form. 34% of all piercings are ear lobe ones. But should this activity be allowed? Or should it be legally prohibited? Do the benefits outweigh the harms of this pursuit? All of these thoughts will be discussed.
