Registered nurses provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients and the public about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members (Purdue) all within an eight-hour period not including the work the paper work. Nurses spend a vast amount of their time completing paper work and writing out care plans. A nurse is not a nurse unless they know how to write in several different forms. In order to be a successful nurse you must first be a good writer. In the process of becoming a nurse you learn to abbreviate many of the medical terms (Lane). The only type of information that may be written in complete sentences is medical reports on patients. Writing is used to complete care plans, charting, reports, articles, discharge notes for patients, case studies and other aspects (Lane). Writing allows nurses to provide proper and safe care for their patients (Lane). As a nurse you must know how to write legible so that other nurses can understand your writing to follow out care plans. If a nurse can’t understand the writing they may give wrong medications to patients, which could cause several medical issues. A simple mistake like this can cause a nurse their licenses and serious federal charges (Purdue). Several times information written on medical charts can turn into legal documents in the results of death of the patients (Purdue). Therefore the information must be accurate and correct at all times. Many nurses go by the motto “If its not charted, then its not done”. When nurses were first began their careers, there was not as much writing. The work that the nurses completed was private care work. Therefore it was their decisions on how to handle the matters. Some of the major tasks of a nursing director are completing admission and discharge forums, writing care plans, and other medical paperwork. Being the administrator is a writing intensive job. They have to insure that their nurses are following state guidelines. They hold daily meetings with nurses and prepare memos for staff. We the future nursing students ask ourselves, why must we take writing courses if we are going to school to be nurses? How will this affect us? Through completing this project I learned that it’s a significant part of our nursing career. It’s the strong foundation to a nursing career. An individual who cannot write is not qualified to be a nurse. In order to be a successful nurse you must first prove your self-worth with paper and pencil.
