When faced with adversity, some people stand up and preform to the best of their ability while others crack under the pressure. In our society, mental toughness is a skill that holds high value to anyone striving to attain success. It is often the thought of being the most powerful or most talented that encompasses our desire for success. In every venture pursued by mankind there is a constant drive to be at the top and to continuously improve. It is essential that the mindset behind this drive see challenges as opportunities for more experience and a positive gain. Professional athletes are watched and often criticized by millions of people, which make for some very tense moments. When they let a high-pressure situation disrupt their mental ‘flow’ it can effectively inhibit their physical ability. Tiger Woods is a highly successful professional golfer who, in the past, has been seemingly immune to pressure. Bartholomew, an associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education at The University of Texas says, “During a match, Tiger Woods doesn’t have to puzzle over how to make a particular swing and the mechanics of his arm movements–he’s executed every single one of those physical moves before and could do all of them in his sleep. What he’s got to be able to do is allow his body to deliver the desired results. Ironically, you want to keep the mind from getting in the way of the performance (Matt Hempel)”. Tiger has always been able to handle the pressure in the past, but recently when there has been a high incentive to win, he disappoints. “In the U.S. Open, Woods bogeyed and/or double bogeyed five out of the first six holes on the final day to take himself out of the running for the Olympic Club crown… On the grandest of stages Woods continues to come up short. (Daniels)”. Some of the most memorable moments of choking occur when the whole world is watching and there is a high incentive for success. There are a number of reasons this can happen but the most common is paralysis by analysis, in other words, overthinking. A person like Tiger Woods can preform a perfect golf swing nearly every time, but if he overthinks his action it can disrupt a once fluid, flawless performance.
