Concoction of Words and Images “ And indeed, words and pictures have great powers to tell stories when creators fully exploit them both”(pg.741). This is the perception of a comic artist, Scott McCloud. But is this idea accepted by everyone? There is a long-established idea about words and pictures. People seem to think that there can only be one or the other to make their work truly a masterpiece. McCloud picks up an informative tone that really helps towards the point he is trying to get across. He dedicates a reasonable amount of his essay towards explaining the different categories and different ways in which words and pictures are used together in comics. The Grand Island Independent says, “ Author and illustrator Preston McDaniels told Seedling Mile Elementary fifth-graders on Tuesday that illustrations and words are like a circle, with one constantly leading to the other.” McCloud has the same perception of words and images as McDaniels and he explains his point extensively and clearly. Just like McDaniel used a circle to explain the relation between words and images, McCloud uses a metaphor comparing dance to the words and images and says that both take turns leading. He does that by giving information about different techniques in which words and images can be used together and he also gives examples for each category to make the reader fully understand every category. McCloud wants to end the traditional thinking that literature and art don’t go together and they should be kept apart. He makes his argument acceptable by showing his knowledge of comic books and the methods that can be used to make them more impactful and

Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer is an extension of an article first published in Outside magazine. In the book, Krakauer further explains the journey of Chris McCandless, while providing his own insight to provide the reader a better understanding of the McCandless reasoning. McCandless lived a nomadic life after he graduated from college, traveling from South Dakota to Mexico. However, his two year journey proved fatal when he took a trip to Alaska, his greatest undertaking. Among his remains several books were discovered, including a copy of Walden by Henry D. Thoreau
Was he a reckless idiot? That is the big question. This is what people always seem to talk about when they talk about Chris McCandless. There are many people who think that Chris McCandless was a reckless idiot who was mentally ill, or something else was wrong with Chris. It seems that almost everybody that met Chris thought maybe Chris was crazy or had problems. Here are just a few things that people said about Chris and his state of mind. Pg 40 Zarza admits saying, "he was always going on about trees and nature and weird stuff like that. We all thought he was missing a few screws. Pg 42 Charlie said, "seemed like a kid who was looking for something." Pg 45 Burres said "I thought Alex had lost his mind when he told us about his 'great Alaskan odyssey, ' as he called it."
Journalist Jon Krakauer reassembles the fact of life of a young man who leaves his family and society to find true himself. Krakauer intends to reveal Christopher McCandless’s character and nature by interacting people who influenced him. The more people were attached to him, get to know more about him in depth; those who know him from outside often refered him as careless. In the book Into the Wild Krakauer presents McCandless as modest and caring person whereas other may see him as thoughtless.
Chris McCandless left his mark on the world and should be respected for being brave enough to challenge himself like this. McCandless went to Alaska searching for adventure and to live off the land. He wanted something more in life. When he went into the Alaskan wilderness , McCandless overcame so many obstacles than the average person wouldn't be able to handle. He was prepared and had all the skills he needed to survive in the wild. McCandless kept fighting against all odds and never gave up on fulfilling his dreams. He deserves more respect and admiration than he got.
In the “Dreed Scott and John Brown” lesson. I learned the democrats ran a politician by the name of James Buchan for president, he believed that popular sovereignty was the best thing to use in the west to help win the election. His presidency had started off on a bad note where on his inauguration the U.S. Supreme Court informed him on their decision on the Scott V. Stanford case. The case dealt with a slave by the name Dred Scott who served most of his life as a personal servant for a U.S. Army surgeon, who later moved across to the Free states and took Scott with him giving him his freedom rights. But he was still legally bound to his master. I also learned that Abraham Lincoln challenged Stephen Douglas to a series of Debates in 1858.
Though people can look into color and composition, others can still even look into the source of the art itself. Cole goes deeper, delving into the source of the art, looking in particular into the idea of cultural appropriation and the view a person can give others. Though it is good for people to be exposed to different opinions of a group or an object, sometimes people can find it difficult to tell the difference between the reality and the art itself. Sometimes art can be so powerful that its message stays and impacts its audience to the point where the viewer’s image of the subject of the art changes entirely. Cole brings up an important question about art, however. Art has become some kind of media for spreading awareness and even wisdom at times, but in reality, “there is also the question of what the photograph is for, what role it plays within the economic circulation of images” (973). Cole might even be implying that Nussbaum’s advertisement can sometimes be the point of some media, and that sometimes the different genres of art can just be to make someone with a particular interest happy. One more point that Cole makes is that “[a]rt is always difficult, but it is especially difficult when it comes to telling other people’s stories.” (974) Truthfully, awareness and other like-concepts are difficult to keep going when a person or a group is not directly involved.
The west is known for its real Cowboys, wide open spaces, and the poor approach for those with mental illnesses. All over the region, people suffering from these diseases are pressured into silence by the majority’s mentality about being a true westerner. Within groups of adults, acceptance, both self and social, is hard to come by. The results are often devastating to those who are troubled. Because the mountain west internalizes being Cowboy tough, people need to learn more about mental illness, and the afflicted too often rely on self-sufficiency and experience the difficulty of going against culture.
Death is a concept that people find hard to accept. You keep asking yourself “what if” as if it’s going to make your loved one come back. “What if I had been there? What if someone had talked him out of it? What if…?” You always ask yourself these questions, but never get an answer. I find myself still asking these questions even though I know they will never be answered. Death takes the ones we love the most too soon. Unfortunately, I know this feeling all too well.

Christopher Johnson McCandless epitomises the adventurous spirit and escaped from his secure future to live in the wild Alaskan terrain to escape from reality. Throughout the story, Walker uses brilliant imagery in describing each detail of what the mother sees through the eyes of her world. This imagery in turn creates a more interesting and imaginative story, and allows the reader to experience what the narrator is experiencing. The theme of imagery is not within the story, but how the story is told. However, the theme of love of one's family heritage is within the heart and not on the wall.

In his editorial "Words Triumph Over Images," Curtis Wilkie blames today’s media for being “reckless” and “a mutant reality show”. He believes that television and radio are “unfiltered”, which causes the quality of journalism for newspapers to be unmatched. Yet, it is unfair to label all media that is not print as lesser because the quality of any media relies on the viewers and the individual journalists, and in drastic situations like a hurricane, reporters may have many road blocks. Any of these aspects can affect the quality of journalism, which invalidates Curtis Wilkie’s claim.
Kleinfeld tries to categorize Chris McCandless as a hero, dumb jerk, or soul searcher. She uses pathos as well as blatantly stating her opinion to achieve her goal. In Jon Krakauer’s book Into the Wild we see many aspects of Chris McCandless that both support and contradicts these categorizations given by Kleinfeld. Jon Krakauer shows us every aspect of Chris McCandless’s journey as well as his life before, by doing this Krakauer shows Chris McCandless is not just one category, he is not any category at all.
