There are three poetic devices in this poem. The first poetic device is an allusion to the big impact that Woody Guthrie's music made on the world. He expressed his opinions on problems like facism (Nazi Germany’s) and the Vietnam war through his music. He even put the words "This machine kill facism" on his guitar. In this part of the poem Margo is comparing what she is going to do for Quentin to how much of a good impact Woody Guthrie's music made on the world. She is saying that she is not changing the world but she is changing someones life and that is a very generous thing for her to do. I thought that this allusion would be appropriate because it mentions, multiple times in the book, and that Woody Guthrie is one of Margo's favourite singers. …show more content…

The second device that I used in this poem was the simile “Q is Simple and boring like Encyclopedia Books". This simile reveals aspects of both Margo and Quentin personalities. Firstly, “Margo always loved mysteries” (8) and she demonstrated this by getting very interested in the story of a dead man that her and Quentin found when they were younger. She asked around the neighbourhood until she found out the most she could about this man and then recounted everything she knew to Quinten. Since she loved mysteries she would criticize encyclopedia's for being dull compared to what she is used to reading. This is therefore a good thing to compare someone to when describing them as boring and plain. Quentin expresses at the beginning of the book that he likes "routine" and "being bored" (24). This shows the readers how plain, simple, and normal Quentin is and that he is aware he is that way and likes being that way.
