Validating an Idea through Research I love animation movies. To me, it’s reality but with a clay form finish and a quick life lesson thrown in. One of my favorite movies from my late teens was Robots. In the story, a young robot named Rodney invents a helper machine called Wonderbot. To create Wonderbot after so many failed inventions, Rodney does intensive technical research. After a series of adventurous meetings and mishaps, he becomes the Vice President of a big robotic company. Back then, before I even entered my current field, I wondered “He still had Wonderbot! Will it be a demanded by the citizens of Robot City?” With all the research Rodney did, he never questioned if it will be needed by the functioning robots or if something similar was already made and getting into production. Bigweld of the robotic company Bigweld Industries noted “You know, I love to tinker, but all the tinkering in the world isn't useful unless it starts off with a good idea. So, look around for a need and start coming up with ideas to fill that need. One idea will lead to another, and before you know it... [knocks over a domino row which leads to the last one flipping a light on] ...you've done it! See a need, fill a need!” But all the ideas in the universe, no matter how great or useful is not worth the time you took to think an idea up if you don’t validate through research. As a business researcher in the Caribbean, I have had clients approach me questioning their way forward. Because of confidentiality, I cannot elaborate, but, for example, one of my clients at the end of the research validation was glad she took the step to contact my company as it saved her money, time and effort.
