Women in a nutshell

Nathaniel Hawthorne is known for his gender based and the role of women in society themes. These themes are clearly seen in his famous work “the Scarlet Letter”. Moreover these themes are also portrayed in this short story “the Birthmark.” The Birthmark is a story about “a man of science” who “persuaded a beautiful woman” to marry him. “Very soon after marriage,” Aylmer wanted his wife Georgina’s birthmark to be removed as it made her imperfect in his eyes. The Birthmark exemplifies the norms, the duties and the obligations of a woman in marriage as well as in her society.
The birthmark, “a crimson stain upon the snow” was an imperfection and a symbol of “his wife’s liability to sin, sorrow, decay and death.” Through Aylmer’s vision, the birthmark was looked upon as a defect in his wife; nevertheless it was Aylmer who was the flaw in their relationship. He obsessed over something unattainable which cost his wife’s life. The birthmark enhanced her beauty and is described as “many a desperate swain would have risked life for the privilege of pressing his lips to this mysterious hand.” The birthmark was not seen as a flaw in her by other men except her husband. On the other hand, one should notice, that Hawthorne in this short story does not mention any of Georgina’s view on Aylmer’s flaws. This implies the conflict between the gender’s expectations in a society. It is okay for a man to be flawed where as a woman is expected to be perfect in all form. This is also seen today, only the ‘beautiful’ women are seen on the television and some that may be a little less beautiful get the surgeries done. The society has made this imaginary perception of a perfect woman. Every woman is expected to be perfect. Whether it is at home as a hou...

... of the light and playful secrets which science had taught him among its profounder lore.” Aylmer again portrays the role of society, who’s trying to impose their expectations for women. Explaining further, this shows how a woman accepts her societal expectations because the society, itself,( just like Aylmer) clandestinely soothes and comforts women (his wife).
The birthmark by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a very intricate story comprised of many complex conflicts. In addition to the societal norms and expectations for the women, it also furthers the relationship of science and nature which is another great conflict seen this this short story. After several readings, the relationship and the conflict between the society and the women stood out to me most as that is something everyone can relate to especially the women.
