According to Merriam- Webster Dictionary the definition of mental disorder is “A mental or bodily condition marked primarily sufficient disorganization of personality, mind, and emotions to seriously impair the normal psychological functioning of the individual—called also mental illness.” Women suffer from the labels that are caused by mental disorder. Women suffer from mental illness every day. The history background of mental illness dates back to the ancient world. Over the years the healing of mental illnesses there has been lost of theories of the causes. Early civilizations such as Greece, India, and many others focused on people being demonically possessed. A true woman was a good wife, a servant and a good mother. One in eleven women diagnosed as "insane" or crazy in the 1850s suffered from a mental illness diagnoses during or after pregnancy (Harris). If you think this is outrageous, you should look up today’s statics. Today 29% of women have been diagnosed with a mental illness. “Psychiatric diagnosis and treatment historically have been used as means of social control in the lives of women” (Harris). Diagnoses became harder and harder due to some of the theories that came out. Nature and nurture is the debate of whether or not a person’s development is decided by birth or if it’s decided by surroundings and the way others are acting. It establishes the two importance of developments in Mental Diseases (Bollinger and Frey). It is important to know that there are many different symptoms of mental diseases. “It is important to note that Bacterial and viral infections, metabolic illnesses, medications and street drugs can all affect a person’s mental status” (Bollinger and Frey). Brain injuries can cause people to have disorientation, speak incoherently, concentration problems, hallucinations and even violent moments. When doctors see those symptoms they refer to a person’s mental state as delirium. Delirium is a medical emergency that needs to be treated as quickly as possible (Bollinger and Frey). If women start to feel weird they should go be examined by a doctor
