Women in the Military Equality between men and women has been a growing issue in the United States and in almost every country in the world. Starting in 1919, women earned the right to vote throughout the United States. Earning the right to vote was the first milestone in the women's rights movement and gave women hope to move forward. Over the past century, women have faced inequality throughout the workforce, military, and even their basic constitutional rights have been limited. Decades of agitation and protest has gone into trying to make things equal and it is still a daily struggle that many women work through. Women have served in the United States military since 1775. For example, a soldier’s judgment might be affected in several possible ways if a loved one is injured or killed. He or she might become overwhelmed with the desire for revenge and take unnecessary risks, placing the unit in greater danger than otherwise. However, those concerns are very general. In the military, service members are taught to carry out relationships within a working environment with the utmost professionalism and if those lines are crossed, there are consequences. Those who are found guilty of unprofessional relationships that compromises any part of the unit’s ability to successfully obey orders and carry out a mission can be punished as severely as receiving a discharge from the branch of service. All in all, disallowing women into a branch of the military solely because they can cause unprofessional relationships is wrong and should not be a reason why women cannot perform their duties in the …show more content…

The physical concerns lie in the simple fact that the female skeletal system is less dense, and more prone to breakages.(Herbert). According to the Center for Military Readiness, the standing physical measurement averages for female soldiers are shorter and smaller than men, with forty-five to fifty percent less upper body strength and twenty five to thirty percent less aerobic capacity, which is essential for endurance during combat. However, despite studies in the obvious difference in a woman’s physique compared to that of a man, there are experts who agree that there are women, although a minority, who possess the physical strength and endurance to handle the stresses that combat can cause. “More than 40,000 American women served in the war against Iraq. The Marine Corps awarded twenty-three women the Combat Action Ribbon for service in the Persian Gulf War because they were engaged by Iraqi troops.” (Willens). This fact alone shows that women have the strength to undergo active military situations and combat and can serve our country with the same security that any man
