“The maximum salary for a WNBA player is $111,500 while the minimum salary for a NBA player is $525,093” (Hampton). This reveals that men in the NBA can make greater than $414,000 more than any female in the WNBA. A gender pay gap such as this one is not only present in professional basketball, it exists in almost all professional sports in the United States. When one takes a look at the statistics regarding how much males and females within the same sport are paid, it is obvious that the men are given more money, even if they are not as successful as the women. Job payment is a substantial issue when it comes to gender inequality, and men are often the ones being paid more than the women. The sports that have the biggest gaps regarding payment for men and women are basketball, golf, and soccer (Hutt). In basketball, on average, females earn only 1.6% of the male salary (sportsmanagement.adelphi.edu). As mentioned before, the maximum salary for WNBA players is less than the minimum salary for a NBA player (Hampton). Although the gap in golf is not as drastic compared the the gender pay gap in basketball, the salaries given to men and women golfers are nowhere near each other. Female golfers only earn 16.6% of what male golfers earn (sportsmanagement.adelphi.edu). Stacy Lewis, the top female earner in professional golf in 2014, earned $4,992,879.50 less than the top male earner in 2014, Rory McIlroy (sportsmanagement.adelphi.edu). But one of the most well known issues between the salary of men and women is in professional soccer. “Top female soccer players earn only 14.4% of what average men earn” (sportsmanagement.adelphi.edu). After winning first place inthe world cup the women earned 2 million dollars but the men earned 9 milllion dollars for losing in the sixteenth round of the world cup. Female tennis players can often have a greater salary compared the the male tennis players.
