Women In Hip Hop Culture

The purpose of this paper is to examine women within the hip hop culture. More specifically, this paper is going to examine the relationship that women have with the hip hop culture. To gain a better understanding of the unique relationship, one has to examine all aspects that might influence this relationship. For instance, the ways in which sexual abuse plays a role in these women’s lives (Sharpley-Whiting). Therefore, in order to gain a better understanding this paper will discuss topics relating to the sexual abuse and feminism. This paper will then go on to further discuss topics relating to women in hip hop that should be further explored.

To get a better understanding of what it is, and what those females focus on, one can turn to Gwendolyn D. Pough’s What It Do, Shorty?: Women, Hip-Hop, and a Feminist Agenda. Right off the bat Pough begins defining these women. According to Pough, “Hip-hop feminists are women and men who step up and speak out against gender exploitation in hip-hop” (Pough, 80). From this, Pough is getting across that these hip hop feminists are different from other feminists in that they specifically pay attention to the issues within the hip hop culture (Pough, 80). After defining in her own words what a hip hop feminist is, Pough also goes goes on to “open the door for further dialogue about women, rap, and hip-hop feminism” (Pough, 78). Pough does this simply by discussing some of the issues these women are facing. For instance, the ways in which the media has caused negative and unwanted attention to black females who are not a part of the industry (Pough, 84). Pough states, “As much as we try to move away from allowing negative images to impact our lives, there are real implications that we need to contend with” (Pough, 84). Issues like this, that are very commonly talked about, help us to understand the relationship that women have with hip hop.
