Conclusion Women had fought from long before since long before there was any documentation of it but I chose the time period between 1849 and 1914 because it was a period of action that I believed to be important to capture. The women gained the right to vote which basically is their first opportunity of having a voice about what happens in the society that they live within. Many people began to realize that the French society would prosper more with women alongside the men. Resulting in people one after another joining the feminist movement whether male or female. Before World War I, equality for woman and men were very unfair. Woman weren’t even legally “persons”; they weren’t allowed to join parliament or the senate because they weren’t legally “persons”, therefore these jobs were occupied by men only. During World War I and World War II, many men had left for war, thus meaning there were many job openings that needed to be occupied as soon as possible, women then began to take on stereotypical male jobs which men thought women couldn’t do or couldn’t do as well. Women showed their capabilities and realized they shouldn’t be considered less than men. In retaliation of not being considered “persons”, women decided to take action.

To answer the question of why French women did not receive the right to vote until April 21, 1944, one only needs to look at the paradoxical nature of the French Revolution of 1789 for the answer. The Revolution that promised "liberté, égalité, et fraternité," for all delivered on its promise by giving to history the Reign of Terror 1793-1794, led by the Jacobins and characterized by hasty and tyrannical justice. Though the French had thrown off the shackles of the monarchy, it adopted the murderous treachery of the Jacobins and nearly crowned Napoleon king (Wolf 36). French history is plagued with this kind of paradox and incongruency, and it is in this political atmosphere that French feminism tried to grow. The legacy of the French Revolution seemed to include a fear of revolutionary violence that resulted in the government periodically repressing those who espoused new ideas (Moses 6). Feminism, being a revolutionary movement, was often subject to these repressions. From the Revolution to the end of World War Two, women would be subject to being the "second sex." Therefore, because of the discontinuity of French political history, the strength of the Patriarchal culture, and the inability of the French feminist movement to form a cohesive unit, French women could not obtain the right to vote until 1944.
While the American Revolution was a fight for freedom and independence from another country, the French Revolution was a fight within an established country. The government tried to create new taxes for everyone. From the wealthy to the poor, all were struggling to pay taxes. After much violence and a long time of war, they became a republic and briefly passed male suffrage. Then, the old administrative system was changed into eighty-three territorial departments, giving them all a new name. While preparing to fight, they created the world’s largest army with around 80,000 men. This was an army of citizens representing the nation with officers from middle and lower class. During the 1940's, women's roles and expectations in society were changing quickly and a lot. Before, women had very limited say in society. Since unemployment was so high during the Great Depression, most people were against women working because they saw it as women taking jobs from men that needed to work. Women were often stereotyped to stay home, have babies, and to be a good wife and mother. Many photographs in the time period by Jacob Riis and Lewis Hine did not shed light on a woman’s hardships, but rather undermined their domestic work. Society failed to give women credit for their work at home due to the common misconception that a woman’s work was easier than that of a man’s. Margaret Byington’s article Homestead: The Households of a Mill Town contrastingly gave an accurate portrayal of the distress women faced in their everyday life. In the 1940s, the careers of women and men were altered when World War II was at its peak, during the time between 1940 and 1945 the year the war ended, American factories and shipyards produced around 300,000 military planes, 86,000 tanks, 8.5 million guns and carbines, 3 million machine guns, 72,000 naval ships, 4,900 merchant ships which would carry important and needed supplies, and 14 million tons of explosives and ammunition for the war (the 1940s, 23). They knitted stockings and sewed uniforms for the soldiers. They also had to replace men out in the factories as weavers, carpenters, blacksmiths, and shipbuilders. While reading Frankenstein many readers many approach the notion that the female’s roles and responsibilities were entirely different from men’s. One of many things I found interesting was how the roles and responsibilities of females impacted the lives of men as well. Females played a very important role even thought they were lastly to prosper. When looking for information on how female roles and responsibilities made a difference, I came across many very important articles, which show feminism, the domesticated roles of females, and how females were portrayed in Frankenstein.
19th-Century Women Works Cited Missing Women in the nineteenth century, for the most part, had to follow the common role presented to them by society. This role can be summed up by what historians call the “cult of domesticity”. The McGuffey Readers does a successful job at illustrating the women’s role in society. Women that took part in the overland trail, as described in “Women’s Diaries of the Westward Journey” had to try to follow these roles while facing many challenges that made it very difficult to do so. One of the most common expectations for women is that they are responsible for doing the chore of cleaning, whether it is cleaning the house, doing the laundry.
The very first time women began to ban together for the same rights that men have was during the French Revolution. Everything was being questioned in France then, and for the first time, women were doing some of the questioning. Why couldn't women vote? Why couldn't women hold public office? Why were women expected to tend to the kids and the house all day? Unfortunately, the male leaders during that time period took it that anything pro-female had to be anti-male, and they did their best to keep the women down.
Women roles have changed drastically in the last 50 to 80 years, women no longer have to completely conform to society’s gender roles and now enjoy the idea of being individuals. Along with the evolution of women roles in society, women presence and acceptance have drastically grown in modern literature. In early literature it was common to see women roles as simply caretakers, wives or as background; women roles and ideas were nearly non-existent and was rather seen than heard. The belief that women were more involved in the raising of children and taking care of the household was a great theme in many early literatures; women did not get much credit for being apart of the frontier and expansion of many of the nations success until much later.
