Have you ever been called “hey baby” when walking down the street? Or felt offensive remarks about your manhood were inappropriate and belittling at work. Well it happens and these are all examples of sexual harassment that happen in today’s society. According to the U.S Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sexual harassment can be defined as unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature and the harassment does not have to be of a sexual nature, it can include offensive remarks about a person’s sex (EECO). To understand why women are more likely victims of sexual harassment one must understand the relationship between sexes in most countries and the inequalities. “Data about the United States indicates that one out of every ten women are raped or sexually assaulted during their lives, while more than half of all women living with men have experienced a battering or similar incident of domestic violence” (Petrocell & Kate 2015). This source suggests that sexual harassment is a form of violence perceived as self- protection for me. Surveys on men’s masculinity indicate that men believe that definition of the word is to be a good provider for one’s family, so men perceived the “feminist woman” as a threat to their traditional role in society and the workplace environment (Petrocell & Kate 2015). Most companies in the United States require employers with over 15 employees to undergo sexual harassment trainings. Avoiding sexual harassment is not an easy task. If an employee, whether it is male or female, is a victim of sexual harassment, they should immediately take the matter to their immediate supervisor. The victim should “communicate either verbally, in writing, or by their own actions to the harasser that the conduct make them uncomfortable and it should be stopped” (Know Your Rights, 2012).
