Most rugby players have at one time or another heard the classic story of rugby's beginning. In 1823, during a game of soccer at Rugby School in England, 16 year old William Webb Ellis, in fine disregard for the rules, picked up the ball and ran with it. After William's display it was so obvious to his classmates the genius of that move that soon the whole school adopted the new rules and word quickly spread. And so the game of rugby was born.
Unfortunately the legend of William Webb Ellis is most likely just that- a legend.
Most scholars agree that this story is probably too good to be true and point out that games that involved running with the ball had existed centuries earlier.

Rugby Union relates. According to the English Rugby Union, the type of football played at Rugby School in Ellis's time was not soccer, but a game with a mixture of both soccer and rugby rules. Handling the ball was prohibited unless the ball was airborne, when the player was permitted to catch it. After catching the ball he would stand still, as did all the other players, and had the option of kicking it wherever he chose, or placing it on the ground and kicking for goal.

Bradbury Robinson threw the first forward pass in football and after that the popularity of the sport went up. In 1905 before the first ever pass and catch there were 84 college teams but not all of them had enough players. 1906 was when the first ever pass and catch was recorded, the year after there were 68 teams but the teams were all full, some colleges for the first time had to cut people. The forward pass made football more popular but some people did not agree on this new concept. Some colleges wanted to make a new league where they couldnt pass. Most teams considered it a gambling play, like going for it on fourth down today. Just 14 years later the NFL was created, there were 14 teams and they played 11 games.
Players added many rules that changed the game, and each school interpreted them differently. In 1848, a group of school representatives met at Trinity College in Cambridge and drew up the first set of soccer rules (Brooks Clark, 1993). It is have been revealed that the American Indians used to play a game similar to modern soccer called Pasuckuakohowog. It literally translates to “they gather to play ball with the foot”. In Pasuckuakohowog, there were goals that were a half-mile wide and a mile apart from each other. Games involved up to 500 people and were very dangerous. Records show that the game was played in the 17th century. This could prove that Pasuckuakohowog is what started it all for soccer in America.
Eddie learned a lot about football from his dad, but when Walter was born, he knew he would have competition. At a very young age Walter and Eddie would have pickup games in the backyard. Imagine it is a Friday night underneath the lights, in October, and you are walking into a stadium packed with fans cheering. But the only noise you can hear is the sound of your cleats hitting the pavement as you are marching up to the field, and the only thing you see is the other team and the end zone. It is such a stimulating feeling, it is unforgettable. Now, you may think I am talking about an American football game, but I am not. I am talking about a rugby match. Believe it or not, football derived from rugby. Differences are in rugby, there are no pads, the ball does not have laces, fifteen men to a side, and above all else, it is an international sport and it is safe compared to football. How come if it is safe, and it is a worldwide sport like soccer, why is it not a school sport like football is too many high schools and colleges across the country? Rugby needs to be a school sport not only because it is safe or it is international, but because it builds character in those that need support, teaches people how to work as team, and to expose what real brotherhood is.
A common question asked is where American Football got its name even though it was played (for the most part) by hand. The answer for this is simple. When the game was first brought to the United States, it was nothing like the football we know and love today. The use of hands was minimal and it was an illegal play to throw the ball in a forward motion. At this time in History the extra point kick was worth six points in the late 1800’s and a touchdown only worth two. So as a result they named the game football because at this point kicking the goal was worth more points and were the main goal of the game. They were tempted to name the game something similar to the game it was made from, rugby, however they decided they would differentiate it by naming it something completely different.
