School Uniforms Are Plaguing Our Schools.
You get up in the morning, you just bought a new shirt that you absolutely adore and you can't wait to wear it too school, but something stands in your way, your school uniform. You would much rather wear your new shirt instead of that uncomfortable blazer and tie. Most parents would say school uniforms are a blessing, but are they really all we crack them up to be? School uniforms create problems for the school, the students and everyone in between. For starters, school uniforms are a hassle for the schools themselves. These uniforms are expensive. The cost of buying a uniform for each kid in the student body will add up quickly. The costs spent on them could be used for new textbooks, an arts program or new equipment for the sports teams. They have also never been proven to help in the two places schools need it most; attendance and academics. Schools have debated over it for years

Teachers say it helps kids become more prepared for the workplace and more discipline. This may be true, but times are changing and workplaces are becoming more informal. “Business casual” is becoming the new normal work attire. It has also been said that the uniforms make it harder for kids to get things like cigarettes and alcohol. This may seem like an easy solution but most kids aren’t that stupid. Kids will still find ways to get ahold of these with or without the uniform. If you want to help prevent it, make school ID’s more important to have with kids and have through drug and alcohol prevention in the school system. Another point made is that it help identify kids from a certain school. It can help make the school seem nicer when all the kids have a formal uniform. This is a valid point, but many parents are looking for better academic opportunities, not good looks. The issue of identifying kids could also be solved with school shirts or
... students in various ways, such as to learn how to ‘cooperate’ with their friends and work out the problem.” (Mr. Knight). Uniforms are not just for schools it's also for jobs or teams you play on, so you just have to sit down and think about how school uniforms can change and the rest of your priors for the good or better, uniforms can make your school a safe place, bully and gang violence free zone. Even the statistics show schools that have uniforms have a decrease bullying, gang violence and other crimes. Putnam City Schools should adopt school uniforms next year.
Indigenous literature is finally getting well-deserved recognition in the literary world, and the messages within the text are taking center stage in their popularity. True Indigenous lives are coming out through the powerful words of respected Indigenous authors. Within Drew Hayden Taylors, ‘Dead White Writer on the Floor', Eden Robinsons', ‘Son of a Trickstar,’ and Waubgeshig Rices ‘Moon of the Turning Leaves’, the truths come to life through different authors' perspectives. In ‘Dead White Writer on the Floor,”and ‘Moon of the Turning Leaves’ both novels expose the trauma experienced by governmental control. In ‘Moon of the Turning Leaves’ and ‘Son of a Trickstar’ demonstrate the theme of survival.
Having some sameness can create a safe environment in schools. Having school uniforms can help decrease in-school violence, theft rates and gang colors. School uniforms can also eliminate distraction that clothes can cause. According to a study done at a Long Beach middle school overall school crime decreased by 36% when they enforced a mandatory program. If people did not have to wear school uniforms gang rates may go up, theft rate would be higher and it would help the school see who belongs at school and who doesn’t. You need school uniforms to have a safe environment for people to teach and learn.
If a complete stranger were to ever go onto a campus, staff members would be able to distinguish the intruder because everyone would be wearing the same thing. The intruder would be easier to spot among the crowd. Uniforms also create safety when a group of children go on field trip. It is easy for one student to get distracted and lose the group. However, when the teacher tries to find the student and speaks to the officials about the lost child, the student will be easy to identify because he or she will be wearing a school uniform. School uniforms have been proven to decrease violence in a school setting as well. The article, “School Uniforms: a qualitative analysis of aims and accomplishments at two Christian School,” provides an example by saying, “ Long Beach Unified School District was one of the first and largest districts in the United States to mandate school uniforms in 1994, and after one year the district reported improvements in student behavior…” (Firmin et al., 2006). Students get a sense of pride, tend to behave better, treat staff and each other with
School uniforms also reduce ones ability to choose clothing that fits individual comfort needs. Above all, school uniforms even go against the 1st Amendment of the Constitution of the United States, which is about the establishment of religion and free speech. School uniforms are affecting the amount of money spent on clothing in a negative way. Many people think parents/guardians are saving money, but really, they are just spending more money. If one were to think about it, school uniforms can’t be worn outside of school.
Mentioned in Pros and Cons of School Uniforms, “When children wear their own clothes into school, this then becomes a time for them to judge each other, so it prevents competition and teasing” (Pros and Cons of School Uniforms). When you have school uniforms you won’t be wearing different things so you will become more equal. If the students are equal, it then reduces judgement and bullying between the students and makes the school a better place. Another positive statement on how school uniforms are beneficial comes from, Pros and Cons of School Uniforms, “Many educators believe that students who wear school uniforms perform better academically in school, and a study done in 1988 by Notre Dame shows a slight statistical evaluation in student performances among students who wear uniforms” (LoveToKnow). School uniforms will remove the clothing distraction and increase the amount of time given to the academics. Some students take time in the morning to get ready for school, uniforms will allow that time for sleep and studies. According to Procon.org, “Parents can reduce their financial burden when their children are limited to wearing one outfit everyday” (ProConorg Headlines). You won’t feel the pressure to buy clothes that are in style, or expensive and trendy. Uniforms are easier to maintain. They tend to last longer and can be washed easier than other clothes. Wearing school uniforms create a community of higher educated students and equality to
School Uniforms are a logical choice for the public school venue. Uniforms prevent students from a lower income background to be singled out for poorly made or cheap clothing, prevents use of gang colors, allows for certain safety measures, and allows teachers to form impressions of students based on actions and work rather than dress code choices.
Once again I think school uniforms are the way to go. With just adding uniform there would be so much less problems. Kids wouldn't be bullied as much, parents would spend less money on buying new trendy clothes, girls wouldn't be as tempted to break the code, boys wouldn't be “distracted” by girls as teachers would say. With just one simple thing to be added so many problems could
Children tend to break off into “cliques” and uniforms could possibly help unite students. Finding creative ways to express their individuality through other outlets other than fashion can help children forge friendships based on their common interests. In conclusion, I feel that school uniforms are something all schools should really consider implementing in their policy. All of these points show that they can be budget-friendly, help children focus and lower the barriers children can build up because of merely what they are wearing.
School uniforms are increasingly popular across the nation. In fact, it becomes a huge controversial argument of communities rejecting these mandated school uniforms in their schools. However, school uniforms are not meant to be a negative thing; in fact, it could be positive in many ways by: eliminating cliques, saving money for parents, and taking away the bullying from students less fortunate. Meanwhile, on the other side of the argument, people believe that school uniforms will violate students’ freedom of expression, create a financial burden on families, and uniforms will not alleviate problems. However, with a solution that would benefit both parties, the public school systems in Oklahoma City district would benefit greatly
The most common argument against school uniforms is that they take away the students right to self-expression. Yes, school uniforms limit what the students have to wear, but students can still have their own ways of self-expression. Students can still express their style of choice with their hair and what accessories they wear. Their shoe choice is also a form of self-expression. Students can make the uniforms their own style without breaking the dress code. School is a place to learn. Outside of school, self- expression is limitless. Some parents also believe that it could interfere with students' natural behavior to experiment with different identities. Having uniforms in schools helps erase the defined line of the social classes. Typically, popular kids in the higher social classes wear the trendiest clothing...
School uniforms lack effectiveness. They don’t help fix any problems. Many believe that school uniforms take away the students distraction towards clothes and appearance and enhance academic performance. However, it does not take a genius to realize that wearing a uniform does not automatically make a student more attentive or hard-working. There may be several other reasons as to why a student lacks focus or is distracted. Those reasons may include problems at home, with other students or even with teachers. Schools should do everything they can to help students with those proble...
n our public schools today - they may seem like a good suggestion, but when looked at closer, all uniforms do is disguise the center of attention of the real concern that need to be successfully worked out. If security is a worry, we shouldn't be looking to a uniform to rectify the issue - if the concern is students not concentrating on school work, or getting meager grades, again, uniforms should not be seen as a way out. We have a duty to teach our children as much as we can in safe surroundings, and those are grave concerns that cannot be resolved by putting all children in the same attire. If all the children are wearing the same clothes, you still have a question with security and poor instruction - and now you have a student body that is being taught not to express their individuality. Uniforms in some cases, add to a school's concern, they do not answer them.
A uniform is a standard set of clothes that is worn by a group of people. These people may be members of an organization or a group of people having the same ideas. There are thousands of kinds of uniforms in the world worn by people, such as police officers, firefighters, doctors, lawyers, security guards, and even fast-food restaurant workers. School uniforms are a controversial issue in schools today. Many schools have already adopted a policy mandating school uniforms, while many more are still considering the change. School uniforms create an atmosphere of equality in which the students are able to achieve to their best, while attaining the most out of their education. School uniforms should be mandatory to unite the school community as one, to instil discipline among the student body, and to eliminate distractions that will help students focus more, which in turn will help our society.
I don’t think children or teens should have to wear school uniforms. It deprives them of their freedom of speech. They should have the right to wear what they want when they want. The uniforms are degrading and appalling. Everything would be dull and boring if everyone looked the same and wore the same stuff! Whatever happened to our U.S. Constitution? Some kids become stressed out and could get depressed because they cannot choose what they can wear, In Our own country? The land of the free and the home of the brave and we can’t even choose what we wear? The effect would be: students becoming angry and violent, and worst case scenario, suicide.
