There is a pattern with malevolent tyrants in history. They cast themselves as the ”Champion of the People”. They fight for what they say is the betterment of the country for the people. Leaders like Adolf Hitler and Mao Zedong employed these strategies. History shows that Andrew Jackson does not deserve to be compared with them, however, he committed similar acts like theirs , that were on a much smaller scale. The facts of the matter are, he forced a financial crisis onto the US because he was angry at the second national bank, he instituted a system that cost almost 1,000 people their jobs, and he ordered the genocide of over 4,000 Native Americans. The facts show that Andrew Jackson is infamous.

Up until Andrew Jackson’s presidency, relations between Presidents and Native Americans had always been fine. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both preached acculturation or the process of adopting the cultural traits and social patterns of another group. The Native Americans in the years up to Jackson’s presidency were becoming more and more “civilized” or European. They had begun learning English and becoming Christian. Andrew Jackson sought the expansion of America’s farms, and he was willing to get more farms westward at any cost. In 1830, Andrew Jackson proposed the “Indian Removal Act” and both The Senate and The House of Representatives voted in favor for its institution. However, the Supreme Court ruled that this was unconstitutional. Andrew Jackson did not believe that the Supreme Court had the power to decide what was constitutional or not, so he simply ignored them. This forced migration of Native Americans doomed their race. Native American population was on the downswing for quite a while, but with better respect for them and their property, the population could have rebounded. During this “Trail of Tears” over 4,000 Native Americans died, most of them young children and elderly people. Without the future generations, the Native Americans were doomed.
