Why Students Seek Assistance

While many students are hesitant to ask for assistance when they are struggling in the class room, I personally would actively seek assistance. Not only will speaking up and asking for the extra guidance help with school work; but, it will help build a beneficial relationship with the instructor. Reasons students would rather struggle than ask for asssitance can range from pride, shyness, or the fear of being put down. All are valid reasons why one could shy away from seeking the help they need, but will all also later prove to be the reason the student gets left behind.

It is not unusual for students to have a strong sense of pride or go to any measure to maintain the reputation they have created. And even though it may seem asinine, for some, asking for extra help can be considered a setback. Because being the kid that ask to many questions, being the 'teacher's pet', or being the kid that needs a tutor because they could not retain the information at the pace everyone else did, could -in their eyes- tarnish the name they have made for themselves. Due to the negative connotation associated with these things, if you need extra help you are not considered "cool". And, if we are being honest that is what is on a lot if not most of students mind. Especially at the collegiate level, being "cool" is at the top of the priority list. This leaves millions of students with the internal …show more content…

not fun. Because I am such a shy person, I can truthfully say being shy is definitely a stumbling block. And contrary to popular belief it is not controllable. It is not something one can turn off for convenience purposes and for this reason one misses out on many opportunities. Being too nervous to ask the instructor for more help can be the difference in understanding the material and passing the course or not.Failure is not an option for me, which is why I -shy and all- reach out to get the help I need to better understand any unfamiliar
