Why Should One Have Humility?
Humility is a human characteristic, where one realizes their own insignificance in comparison to other people or circumstances. In a spiritual aspect, humility means putting God and others ahead of our own selfish interests.
In Chesterton's short story called "A Defense of Humility", He states, "Humility is luxurious art of reducing ourselves to a point, not to a small thing or large one, but a thing with no size at all, so that to it all the cosmic things are what they really of immeasurable stature." Humility is an important characteristic that one should have. When one looks at other people first before themselves, they have Humility. By one realizing their own insignificance in comparison to other people will show that his is caring or considerate not selfish or prideful. Having humility shows the world just how humble one's state of mind may be.
The most well known quote from the Bible spoken by Jesus was The Golden Rule, this small quote contains a large amount of wisdom. In order to receive love one must give love first. If one wants to gain respect or be respected, one must give respect to others first even the ones that may be considered one?s enemy. If we wish to live a life that feels fulfilling, we must give openheartedly with others. Do to others, as you would have them do to you. "If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' love those who love them. In addition, if you do well to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' do that. In addition, if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' lend to 'sinners,' expecting to be repaid in full. However, love your enemies, do well to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. (NIV, Luke 6:31-35)
When having Humility, we tend to try and not minimize our work, but we do observe it by thinking of things in a "big picture? point of view. If one is a successful businessperson, one may wonder if he has a duty to be reasonable and truthful as a witness to others.
The wild is a place to push yourself to the limit and take a look at who you truly are inside. “Wilderness areas have value as symbols of unselfishness” (Nash). Roderick Nash’s philosophy states that the wilderness gives people an opportunity to learn humility but they fight this because they do not have a true desire to be humble. Human-kind wants to give out the illusion that they are nature lovers when in reality, they are far from it. “When we go to designated wilderness we are, as the 1964 act says, "visitors" in someone else's home” (Nash). People do not like what they cannot control and nature is uncontrollable. Ecocentrism, the belief that nature is the most important element of life, is not widely accepted. The novel Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer depicts a young boy who goes on an exploration to teach himself the true concept of humility. Chris McCandless, the protagonist, does not place confidence in the universal ideology that human beings are the most significant species on the planet, anthropocentrism.
Human Dignity: We are all created in the image of God and therefore should be treated as humans with dignity and respect. The value or worth of human life.
They demonstrate the humility in various ways. Humility is significant in business fields because it involves the capability to acknowledge mistakes, shortcomings, knowledge gaps and restrictions; they are the keys to getting ahead of the games in business careers. Being humble also intimates their willingness to gather new ideas or receive contradictory information from their staffs. Cain declares that the personalities of the introvert leaders are described with the following personalities: "quiet, humble, modest, reserved, shy, gracious, mild-mannered, self-effacing, understated" (Cain 55). These personalities give introverts advantages to solve many problems at work which extroverts might not able to achieve. The reason is that these qualities make introverts become good thinkers, as a result, they could sometimes come up with the better solutions. These features from introverts would be in favor of making them become great leaders in their
Neely opened her paper with a powerful but yet simple scripture from the Bible. “God is Love.” (1 John 4.16) I believe this is one of the many important scriptures to look back on when talking about a Christian worldview. Love is the core of my Christian worldview. In Luke's Gospel, Jesus mentions this "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” He says, "Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back…” (Luke 6:30-36) Christian love is giving to others what you would want them to give to you in that situation, even if they can’t give it back.
C. S. Lewis stated the distinction memorably: “Humility is not thinking less of ourselves, but thinking of ourselves less.” and went on to say “In other words, humility is fundamentally a form of self-forgetfulness as opposed to pride’s
Magnanimity is the virtue of honor, or having regards for oneself. As with the other virtues, magnanimity has an excess and a deficiency. One who exaggerates their self- regard is vain, and the one who deprecates their self- regard is pusillanimous. A person who attains the virtue of magnanimity realizes that they are great and honorable, but does not take these feelings of honor too far by being too proud or boastful.
..., not only will we acknowledge the needs of others by redeeming ourselves from sensuality, but avoid being prideful by acknowledging how unessential material wealth is in our own lives. When we do this we will break out of the the “competitive rat-race without meaning”, or the “vicious circle” (Arrupe 10), by choosing God’s love and the love for others.
The Oxford Dictionary describes humility as the quality of having a modest or low view of one’s importance. Many people catch the attention of the media today. For a short while, these people stood at the center of everyone’s attention. It becomes difficult to resist letting one’s pride and ego take over when faced with almost unlimited attention. Sometimes this person might work their way into the spotlight through years of hard work. Others may perform one action to bring all attention to themselves. No matter the circumstance, the way a person behaves in front of others greatly influences their opinion of him or her. Tim Tebow, Captain "Sully" Sullenberger, and Neil Armstrong demonstrated
2a quadrant is about where human believe they have a dignity when they trust towards their own worth. This quadrant is about human dignity can be acquire or lose through a self-worth. In some understanding they believe that human dignity something that similar to the sense of pride of somebody or aware about others worth as a human being that live a meaningful life, and respecting others. On the other hand, some argued that being a compromised and embarrassing place is likely become a threat to their own dignity in the society. (Kirchhoffer, 2013) Human be able to gain their pride and feel to have a value but nevertheless they can also feel worthless to the society and will lose their dignity because of the facets from society. Therefore, in this perspective human dignity is about a sense of ego to value the
Polonius characterizes the aspect of human nature that is self-concern. He is constantly looking for ways to ingratiate himself to the king. He sacrifices his own daughter's happiness so that he can prove his theories about Hamlet's madness to the king. Self-concern is another inherent trait that humans cannot escape. People are constantly thinking about themselves and how things are going to affect their lives. They care deeply for their own well being. Certainly they think about others occasionally, but their own person is always number one in their minds.
vanity. The definition of vanity suggests it is excessive belief in one ́s own abilities, in other
In Fukuyama’s words, Human dignity is the badge of factor X. This means that if person 1 feels that person 2 has human dignity than Person 2 fits in Person 1’s Factor X. If you once again imagine the redline that separates humans from non-humans the red line is human dignity. Anyone that a person believes does not have human dignity has crossed their red line and is now no longer considered human. It is possible for Person 2 to believe that person 1 has no human dignity even if person 1 believes that person 2 does. This is because the red line that is human dignity changes from one person to
Intellectual Humility is when the “critical thinker habitually recognizes the limits to his knowledge and experiences”, (Stanley). On a scale between intellectual humility (10) and intellectual arrogance (1), I stand halfway between the two or sometimes teeter between a four and a six. Since I am stubborn, I believe I am neither strong nor weak in the two extremes. I tend to think I know more than I do until I am proven wrong. An example of this is while in my choir class, I constantly argued with my friend about the answer to a problem: math, chemistry, English, you name it. While we both proved each other wrong countless times, I was proven wrong many more times than he was. An example of where I was strong in intellectual humility was the day I discovered the reasons behind my mother’s actions. I
Respect Others (Luke 14:11): "For everyone who makes himself great will be humbled, and everyone who humbles himself will be great." The passage teaches us mainly about helping others if they need help.
The emphasis of servanthood covers the Bible, and is a building block of the Christian faith. Many words are used to describe the term servanthood, however, not all are accurate, or Biblical, but there are two words that are key to the definition and execution of servanthood. Humility is a necessary trait of servanthood; without it, servanthood becomes another avenue for the ego to encompass, in a search for self-affirmation. The deepest root of humility is buried in the recognition and of our infinite dependence on God. While greatness is seldom mentioned along with servanthood, they go hand in hand. Because, greatness is truly measured in scale with God Himself, it immediately becomes small and miniscule by comparison. This should, in turn, produce the purest humility. With this in mind, I have come to define and recognize servanthood as the communion of the true definitions of humility and greatness, and their relationship to God.
