Should men be allowed paternity leave? Paternity leave is the absence of work due to the birth of his child or the adoption of a child. Men take paternity leave to help their wife soon after labor. They also use their leave once the mother is back at work so the child can be cared for and the father would be able to spend time with the infant. Some people agree to the idea of men being able to take paternity leave to be able to spend quality time with their child. Spending time during those early years are the most important for the infant’s cognitive development. As the popular saying goes, “Happy wife, happy life”, men realized that when they keep their wife happy everything else in their life goes well. After a woman gives birth to a child she undergoes stress from the situation she’s been through and caring for a baby who cries day and night. Mundy once wrote that: “The true beneficiaries of paternity leave are women, and the company and nations when women advance” (page#). For woman to have their partner in times of stress is an advantage. Men can help out with the house and child. With the father being home it can keep his partner stress free and children happy as well, therefore, men should be allowed time off for paternity leave. Imagine this, it has been two months since your wife has given birth, and you know she’s still upset that she doesn’t look the same anymore, or hates herself for not being able to breast feed the baby. So you come home only to hear your child crying hysterically and your find not around. You’re looking all around the house and finally found her hanging from the ceiling of your bedroom, a chair kicked to the floor and a note nearby. This wouldn’t necessarily be the case if the lady’s partner took off of work for paternity leave. He could have comforted her in the time of need and be there for his child at the same time. Studies show that, “A low level of paternal involvement in infant care was significantly associated with PPD” (Sejourne, Vaslot, Beaume, Goutaudier and Chabrol). This shows that having a husband and father home with the baby and wife can reduce anxiety, for the family and most importantly the mother. After the birth the mother is undoubtedly exhausted. Having her husband around for physical and mental support can relieve her PPD. Men who take off for paternity leave and are home with their wife and baby can positively impact the child and the mother’s depression. He can relieve her stress and have his wife relax while helping out with the care of the infant as well as some housework, for the sake of his partner’s
