Our society as a whole is being closed-minded when making decisions. We are accepting ideals from 50-60 years ago and letting negative views and affiliations keep us from a very abundant, and renewable resource. We could literally boost our economy over-night, and I am just not talking about one single industry. Right now we know of a plant that can be used for numerous benefits, but we are not using it up to its potential. That plant is Cannabis. I’m not going to talk about how medical marijuana and that every state should legalize it. I am not even going to talk about the medical/drug use of marijuana at all. I am going to talk about hemp. As I said earlier hemp is the longest, strongest, and most durable fiber known. This means it surpasses other fibers like cotton, the most common in today’s world. According to Chris Conrad (man behind Hemp: lifeline to the future) On an annual basis, 1 acre of hemp will produce as much fiber as 2 to 3 acres of cotton. Cotton grows only in moderate climates and requires more water than hemp. Where as hemp is frost tolerant, it requires only moderate amounts of water, and it grows in all 50 states (Hemp Basics, para 2). Not only is hemp better than cotton in terms of agriculture, but hemp fiber is softer than cotton, lasts twice as long as cotton, and will not mildew. It takes many years for trees to grow until they can be harvested for paper or wood, but hemp is ready for harvesting in only 120 days after it is planted. Forests, woods, and tree farms require large tracts of land available in few locations, while hemp does not require that much space at all. Also according to hemp basics, Harvesting hemp rather than trees would also eliminate erosion due to logging, thereby reducing topsoil loss and water pollution caused by soil runoff (Hemp Basics).
