Genetic engineering often has a negative meaning associated with it, such as science fiction and post-apocalyptic scenarios. For some, the thought brings forth the images of gruesome and unrealistic mutations. Genetic engineering is often linked with poisoning food with dangerous chemicals, in result, causing a natural dislike for what they think are contaminated and fake foods.

Genetic modification is actually not as harmful as it seems. It is simply the process of altering its DNA using biotechnology.(“Genetic Engineering”) This includes placing genes from an organism into the genes of another organism. Scientists say that genetically modified food is completely safe to eat. However, ethics and beliefs play a part in their opinions. “GMOs probably trigger disgust because people view genetic modification as a contamination”(“Why People Oppose GMOs Even Though Science Says They Are Safe”).

The plants can ripen fast and can be resistant to common diseases which would kill a normal plant right away. The amount of food produced would be greater, and the nutritional value would increase, as well as the flavour and size. Flavour, size, shape, and attractiveness can influence the chances of customers purchasing the items. Genetic modified food can increase the appeal and as a result, sell more products.

The Future

What can genetic engineering bring for us in the future? Will it do more harm than good? There is no doubt that genetic engineering could be used in more advanced and precise genome editing. Solving genetic disorders can also happen.I think that the rising population would bring needs for greater amounts of food available for everybody. Also, the issue of pollution causing illnesses and sickness would be solved by medical procedures. We may even go as far as modifying ourselves and others to increase mental or physical performance.
Right now, we can only speculate the endless possibilities.
