War has been around for thousands of years and mankind has learned a lot about war. One would ask what does war teach us? Everyone would have a different answer to that question. However, a major lesson we learn from war is it’s a game that can give us knowledge. Why Men Love War written by William Broyles Jr, Ghost of War written by Ryan Smithson and Jericho a story from the book of Joshua all supports the idea that war is a game with the outcome of knowledge. War is just a big game that turns into knowledge that one did not know existed about their self, therefore war can be good for individuals’ people. He is trying to say the war is the worst game mankind should go through because man we see things that will change him. Some of the things that could change a man is killing an enemy, watching fellow soldiers die, seeing civilian die etc. The changes they go through could be bad or good. “You can come back from war broken in mind or body, or not come back at all. But if you come back whole you bring with you the knowledge that you have explored regions of your soul that most men will always remain uncharted,” (Broyles, page 4). War can change someone’s mind or body but if they are lucky the change can be good and they can bring knowledge back with them. Someone is always in charge of the game and in this story, it is the Lord. The Lord told Joshua the following, “You shall march around the city, all the warriors circling the city once. Thus, you shall do for six days, with seven priests bearing seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark. On the seventh day, you shall march around the city seven times, the priests blowing the trumpets. When they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, as soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city will fall down flat, and all the people shall charge straight ahead,” (Joshua 6: 3-5). This quote shows that war is like a game because they must march around the city for seven days and on the seventh they will “attack.” By going around the city seven times they are following a command which is basically being a pawn in a game.
