Was World War I a necessary world conflict? More than 16 million people were killed in WWI, making it one of the deadliest conflicts in history. It all started on June 28, 1914, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and his wife were murdered by a Serb terrorist in the Bosnian town of Sarajevo. This is seen as the immediate trigger to WWI. Though long-term causes, such as imperialistic foreign policy, played a major role. The Austria-Hungarian empire decided to declare war on Serbia because they could not meet one of the demands on Austria-Hungary’s ultimatum. The declaration of war on Serbia triggered a chain reaction of mobilizations and war declarations by many other countries. Some countries went into the war because their ally did and some went into the war without having an ally. “Turkey was eager to oppose Russian and British power in the Near East, and Bulgaria wanted to regain land from Serbia. During the war, the military advancements made it a lot easier to kill more people and damage more countries. Everything they did was geared towards killing the enemy. Medical advancements had to be made in order to keep their men alive. They had to learn about the things that were killing the soldiers and how to treat it in order to decrease casualties.
