Prostitution is one of the most controversial topics in the United States. Prostitution is defined as “ the business or practice of engaging in sexual activity in exchange for payment”. “Worldwide there is an estimation of 40-42 million prostitutes, 80% of them being females ages 13-25”. The risk and violence that prostitutes face happen often and are deadly. Prostitution promotes violent and immoral behavior, promotes sex trafficking, and brings many sexually transmitted diseases (STD). Prostitution should be illegal. Prostitution promotes immoral behavior. Morality is not about religious beliefs, it is about what is ethically right or wrong. Becoming a prostitute is a big risk; getting caught by police, and getting hurt. If the prostitute does not abide by or comply with the client or pimp’s commands, he or she can get beaten to death, raped, etc. “The murder rate for a prostitute is 204 for every 100,000 people, making it the most dangerous job in America” . “70-95% of prostitutes experience physical assault during work, and 60-75% of prostitutes are raped while working as a prostitute”. “Women who are prostitutes are raped 8-10 times each year on average.” (womenslaws.org). A common response to these statistics is why women can not leave or just stop being a prostitute. Sex trafficking is “human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation, including sexual slavery.”. It can happen to any gender, no matter the age. Legalizing prostitution actually leads to more sex trafficking according to some sources. “Studies show that countries with legalized prostitution are associated with higher sex trafficking inflows than countries where prostitution is prohibited.”. This shows that even legalizing prostitution won’t stop the horrible incidents that come with sex trafficking, and makes it worse. While working as a prostitute, there is a very high risk of catching sexually transmitted diseases. Most prostitutes usually don’t use condoms, therefore making it more likely to contract a sexually transmitted disease.
