Looking at the Gymnasium floor, seeing pink underwear with green frogs, I knew I had made a mistake by not listening to my Mom. I had disobeyed her by wearing my jeans that I took from the dirty-clothes basket that morning. I was mortified that my constant wardrobe battles with my parents culminated to that moment. After this infamous day, my mother took back control of clothing I was allowed to wear before left the house. I was not alone in this struggle because many children and teens have a constant struggle with their families when they leave the house. When seeing a teenager in a crop top and booty shorts, my mind does not scream hardworking student. Dress can affect the way that people are treated. Therefore, parents need to start younger and teach children why it is important to receive guidance when picking out the most appropriate outfit. If parents do not take control of choosing wardrobe in young children, it can quickly get out of hand in teen years. Teenagers and children need to learn that dress code is something that they will deal with for the rest of their lives in many school and the work force. Once children grow up there will always be a dress code at their job whether it be a mandatory uniform, pantyhose, or no jeans. Dress code enforces the modest dress of students, preventing bullying and distractions.Numerous people believe clothing is a distraction and when eliminated the school environment is more professional and gives a better education to a student. Many think that a stronger dress code will help students focus in school, but the way a student dresses does not determine a student’s willingness to learn or the teacher’s ability to capture the student’s attention. Also, adults argue that high school is a teenager’s job; therefore, they should dress professionally. However, Elizabeth Forward does not have a policy against sweatpants, sweatshirts, or athletic attire, which are much more unprofessional than tank tops or destroyed denim. I think that the dress code policies should be relaxed to a more lenient state given the temperature of the building throughout the school year, the change in long-term trends among teenagers, and the level of hypocrisy illustrated between the relationship of school’s administration and the dress code policy.
By making children follow authority, they are taught maturity and how to cope with different angles of life in a mature fashion. Clothing restrictions will help kids become more successful and approachable adults in the future.
The author continues to explain the two points he learned, and because of those points, he made his school a casual place. Dress code, probably one of the most talked about topics by teenagers. Most teenagers believe that dress code is “witless” or “incompetent”. Why do we think this? Well, most adults believe that keeping a strict dress code keeps us educated because apparently our clothes are “distracting”. Now I can see how wearing booty shorts and a tank top would be distracting, but how is wearing sweatpants distracting? If anything wearing sweatpants keeps us comfortable, because I know that being uncomfortable is way more distracting than wearing sweatpants. When I wear sweatpants I can lay back and relax while the teacher talks, but if I am uncomfortable I am more likely to move around and fidget with my clothes rather than listen to the lesson.

High school is typically a time when kids begin to distinguish themselves from one another. Students begin to develop their own sense of personal style, desperately trying to both fit in and stand out simultaneously. Being self-conscious and often lacking the confidence needed to assert themselves, teens are forced to use clothing and outward appearance as the means to manifest this individuality. Thus, students should not be forced to wear uniforms to school. Standard uniforms are unproven deterrents to student violence; are a "Band-Aid" to cover up the real problems faced by children and teens; and they violate students' right of self-expression, depriving them of their search for identity.
