Why Is It Hard To Understand Poetry

To understand poetry, or not to understand poetry, that is the question. For me personally, it has been to misunderstand poetry. I have nothing against it personally, for I understand that is was created in a time when society was different. I just have a hard time understanding how some poetry is understood. For me there are three reasons why poetry has been intimidating. Poetry can be misread since it is sometimes hard to understand the theme that the poet is trying to portray, with some poets you have to understand the poet first before you can understand their poems, and poetry can be hard to decipher and understand. Poetry does not follow any set standard when written. Each poet has their own style and this usually confuses me. Poetry is meant to have depth to it, to be reread numerous times to get the meaning, and to me there is kind of a hidden meaning in many poems. Poems were sometimes written to hide the true meaning of what was meant to protect the poet. Many poems were written hundreds of years ago when the society was different. They were not allowed to talk openly about love and other issues. Poetry was also written as a form of rebellion against the power of the day. This all adds to the confusion on trying to understand poetry. Finally until recently I misunderstood things like classical music and poetry. For years I thought it was dry and boring, but I have since come to understand that many poets and musicians years ago were not as we see them today. Today we have this idea that they were prim and proper people who were of a higher class society. Many were quite the opposite, and could be compared to rock musicians today.
