As a student at IMSA, when I first started my classes here I did not expect there to be much importance to the writing aspect of school. But already through the first few weeks, we were assigned our first essays, long passages to read, and we were already beginning to do some in-depth analysis that I had never done before at my old school. Simply stated, IMSA does not lag in the literary department. This past year, I have learned many new things as well as improved on a few skills I had learned earlier, ranging from writing more concise theses to integrating quotes better. Everyone’s lives are filled with experiences, relationships, and environmental influences that can never be erased. These permanent factors in one’s life have an impact on many of their actions, as well as a significant influence on the thoughts they have. A person’s view on life is based on their experiences, relationships, and the ideas they receive from their environment. They will never forget the past, and the past will always have a role in their future, whether it teaches them a lesson or allows them to put trust into specific people. Living in the 19th century society, Kate Chopin had many experiences, relationships, and influences from her environment that impacted her views on her works as a writer. Due to her upbringing within an unorthodox and female led household, many of her stories focus on women being free and intelligent individuals. One such story she wrote portraying these themes was the “Story of an Hour.” Though this was a popular story, stories with these feminine themes like this were seldom seen in 19th century society. By understanding Chopin’s life story, one can see how her familial relationships, marital experiences, and childhood environment affect her motivation to write the “Story of an Hour” which expressed her feminine ideology. It takes a stance in an argument (that Kate Chopin’s life played a role causing her feminine ideology to be expressed throughout her stories), it focuses all my ideas within this essay into one or two sentences, and it gives a complete overview to what my paper is going to be about. But when observing more in-depth, we can see there are many flaws. For example, though it takes a stance on an argument, the argument itself is unclear; what even is feminine ideology? Feminine ideology is never defined in the introduction, and it can be interpreted in a multitude of ways. One key aspect within a good thesis statement is that it forms a stance on a concise argument, but when something as vague as “feminine ideology” is introduced in the thesis, the argument becomes anything but focused. Instead of arguing this ambiguous “feminine ideology” within Kate Chopin’s life, I think I rather should have made the argument of HOW Kate’s life affected her motivation rather than the fact that it DID. This would make the argument much more focused and concise, as well as make the content of my essay more
