Faith can be just a definition, and a word, but can it be something more? Is it more than just “confidence or trust in a person or thing?” Does it mean more to the characters and the book of Savitri? Is it important at all to the book? Well, read to find out. In the short story Savitri: A Tale of Ancient India, faith has driven characters’ actions, displayed an important religion, and has taught people lessons. Without faith, impacting decisions the characters make wouldn’t occur, which would make the story completely different! Also, when faith was shown, it taught about Hinduism, which was an impacting part of ancient India. It is important that the Hindu faith is shown, because Hinduism was a driving point for Indian civilizations. For example, Savitri’s father was very faithful to Hinduism. “Morning and evening for eighteen years he faced the fire on the sacred altar and prayed…” If Savitri’s father wasn’t faithful to Hindu religion, he would never do this. Without his faith, the goddess Savitri, of the Hindu religion, would never be introduced, since she was the one who answered his prayers. Faith also displayed Hinduism because Savitri was very faithful to the religion. When Savitri was praying and fasting, a Hindu ritual, it allowed her to see Yama, who’s the god of death. Her praying and fasting also allows us to see the way Hindu’s would pray and worship. The last way Hinduism is shown through faith is that we learned about a hermitage. In the story, there would be no hermitage if there weren’t people who were totally devoted and faithful the Hindu religion. Hermitages are important to Hinduism because it is full of people “who left the towns … for a life of prayer…” Therefore, without faith in this story, Hinduism would not play a
